Joburg’s Spaza Shop Support Roadshows Begin – What You Need to Know

With a series of roadshows designed to empower spaza shop owners throughout the metro, the City of Johannesburg is getting started right away. These events, which will begin to take place in all seven regions of the city on Monday, May 26, will assist entrepreneurs in learning how to apply for the city’s recently established Spaza Shop Support Fund.
The R500 million fund, which was introduced in Soweto last month, aims to support small township and rural businesses by providing both non-financial and financial support. Up to R300,000 in interest-free loans and grants are available to qualifying spaza shop owners.
In addition to providing financial assistance, the fund aims to assist small business owners in creating long-lasting enterprises, according to city spokesperson Virgil James.
“These roadshows are essential,” James stated. “In addition to giving spaza shop owners access to funding information, they also offer guidance on how to adhere to city regulations, such as those pertaining to food safety and certification.”
As long as they fulfill the compliance requirements during the engagement process, he continued, owners who attend the roadshows may also be able to obtain temporary business permits.
The city is urging all small business owners and unofficial traders to take part in the roadshows, which will run through July.
“This is a great chance for spaza shop owners to expand their enterprises, upgrade their facilities, and collaborate with the city for long-term viability,” James stated.
This could be a turning point for business owners who want to formalize and grow their operations.
