Father’s Day Stargazing in Johannesburg: What to Expect
Held at the scenic TLC Restaurant inside Kyalami Equestrian Park, this event blends science and sentiment. Whether your dad has always been curious about the cosmos or simply enjoys spending time outdoors with the family, this night brings everyone together.
As the sun sets and the sky darkens, join an expert-led laser sky tour and get hands-on telescope time with some of the universe’s greatest hits, including:
-
The Moon’s stunning craters and details
-
Mighty Jupiter and, if you’re lucky, a few of its moons
-
Mars glowing warm and steady
-
Orion’s Belt and other deep-sky wonders
All guided with gentle commentary, accessible explanations, and yes – the occasional joke about Uranus.
Why Stargazing? Why Now?
In a fast-moving city like Johannesburg, slowing down under the stars feels magical. Father’s Day is the perfect excuse to connect.
This isn’t just a science lesson – it’s a chance to bond. Bring the kids, grandparents, or just Dad himself. It’s family-friendly, relaxed, and a refreshing escape from screens and stress.
The event is designed for comfort and curiosity:
-
Food & drinks available at the TLC Restaurant (no cooler boxes allowed)
-
Seating, toilets, & bar service on site
-
Soft lighting ensures safe movement without spoiling the night sky
-
Access via Crocus Road, then Dhalia Road (the last 1.2 km is gravel but manageable by most cars)

A Local Gem with Big Skies
Since 2020, Telescope Night has been hosting starry sky sessions across Joburg, building a loyal community of space-curious locals. Using Celestron Nexstar telescopes and warm, beginner-friendly guidance, they create experiences that are part science, part storybook.
Attendees call these events “life-changing,” “surprisingly emotional,” and “the most I’ve seen my teen look away from their phone in weeks.”
This is the kind of night that lingers – not just because you finally learned the difference between a planet and a star.
