Trump Diagnosed with Common Vein Condition After Swelling and Bruising

US President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common and non-life-threatening condition, after recent public appearances sparked concern about his health.

The 79-year-old president, who made history in January by becoming the oldest person to assume the presidency, was seen with swollen legs and a heavily bruised right hand, leading to speculation across social media and news outlets.

On Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the growing curiosity, confirming that Trump underwent a medical examination “out of an abundance of caution.” An ultrasound revealed chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which leg veins struggle to circulate blood properly, especially in older adults.

Leavitt emphasized that the diagnosis was benign and common, particularly among people over 70. She added that Trump had requested the update be shared “in the effort of transparency.”

Bruising from Handshakes and Aspirin

As for the discoloration on Trump’s right hand, Leavitt said it was due to tissue irritation from frequent handshaking combined with aspirin therapy, which he takes as part of a routine cardiovascular health regimen. She called it a “well-known and benign side effect.”

For months, the White House had waved off concerns about the bruising, attributing it solely to handshakes. But after the bruises became increasingly visible, especially during Trump’s appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey, speculation mounted.

Trump ‘In Excellent Health’ Despite Diagnosis

Presidential physician Dr. Sean Barbabella reassured the public in an official letter that Trump “remains in excellent health” despite the new diagnosis. There were no signs of deep vein thrombosis, heart failure, kidney problems, or other systemic illness, he wrote.

Dr. Matt Heinz, a hospital-based physician in Arizona, noted that chronic venous insufficiency is “pretty common” in older adults, especially those with weight issues or limited mobility. “It’s often treated with compression socks and physical activity,” Heinz explained.

He dismissed the need for invasive treatments like prosthetic valves unless symptoms worsen.

Presidential Health Under a Microscope

As Trump campaigns for another term, his health, like that of his predecessor Joe Biden, 82, is under intense scrutiny. Biden’s own health issues, including a recent prostate cancer diagnosis, were central to the 2024 election, and he eventually dropped out after a shaky debate performance.

Now, with Trump back in office, his every move is being examined. Yet, for now, the White House insists there’s no cause for alarm.

“President Trump is in very good shape,” Leavitt said, “and he continues to perform his duties without limitation.”
