Leadership shakeups, strategic pivots and silence on the Top 30 spark speculation around South Africa’s biggest pageant

The glittering Miss South Africa stage will remain empty a little longer this year.

In a move that’s raised eyebrows across the country, the Miss SA organisation has announced that the 2025 pageant has been postponed. While the contest traditionally takes place in August, organisers now say they’re “aligning with global events” and working to expand the pageant’s mission beyond beauty — into bold new territory.

But the timing, paired with recent exits from top leadership and growing public concern over the lack of updates, has sparked questions: What’s really going on behind the scenes?

A Shift in Strategy

According to spokesperson Kenneth Makhanya, the organisation is “broadening the reach and impact” of Miss SA. The revamped vision includes a new focus on entrepreneurship, job creation, cultural awareness and social cohesion — themes that reflect a deeper, more future-forward role for the crown.

While those goals have been met with support, the communication gap between the April closing of entries and the still-unreleased Top 30 has left many aspiring contestants — and fans — feeling in the dark.

On social media, frustrated pageant followers have been asking, “Where is the Top 30?” and “Why the silence?” One X user posted, “We love growth and strategy, but not knowing what’s going on makes it feel like we’re being ghosted.”

Leadership Departures Raise Eyebrows

The timing of the postponement has only heightened speculation. Just weeks ago, Miss SA CEO Stephanie Weil officially stepped down from her role, following the earlier departure of long-time creative director Werner Wessels. Both were influential figures in reshaping Miss SA over the last few years into a more socially conscious and globally competitive brand.

Their absence leaves a gap in vision — and some fans wondering whether the organisation is simply finding its feet or in the midst of a deeper restructuring.

Adding to the intrigue, Miss SA also pulled out of the Miss Supranational pageant earlier this year, without much fanfare or public explanation.

What Happens Now?

The organisers insist the show will go on — just not yet.

In a statement, they reassured fans that preparations are “progressing well” and that the eventual 2025 pageant will be “a huge success.” Still, with no confirmed date, no Top 30, and no clear indication of what the reimagined Miss SA might look like, the silence is louder than ever.

As one former contestant commented, “Miss SA isn’t just a beauty pageant — it’s a platform for young women to launch dreams. So it’s only fair to keep us informed.”

A Pageant in Transition

Since its bold reboot in recent years, Miss South Africa has evolved from glitz and gowns to purpose and power. Winners like Zozibini Tunzi and Shudufhadzo Musida have proven that Miss SA can stand for substance as much as style.

But reinvention comes with growing pains.

If this delay means a more inclusive, impact-driven, and culturally relevant future for the pageant, South Africans may be willing to wait. But until more transparency arrives, the crown — and the conversation — remains up in the air.
