A Look at South Africa’s Multi Billion Rand Fast Food Scene

Fast food is big business in South Africa — really big. The local market is worth an astounding R177 billion annually, and it’s easy to see why. The industry is booming, with nearly 6,000 fast-food restaurants spread across the country. However, the winds of change are blowing, especially with the introduction of 30% Trump tariffs that could rock US-based brands in the country.

Who’s On Top? McDonald’s & KFC Lead the Way

According to a recent report by Mordor Intelligence, McDonald’s and KFC are the reigning giants, consistently topping the charts in share of search (SoS) rankings. Both brands each hold more than 10% of the local market, solidifying their positions as the most popular fast foods in South Africa. This is despite the rising competition from local favorites like Chicken Licken, Nando’s, Steers, and Roman’s Pizza, who are steadily increasing their presence.

Interestingly, the research focused on the visibility and buzz around these brands, rather than sales figures. While sit-down restaurants like Spur and Mugg & Bean were excluded, it’s clear that South Africans are craving the convenience and quick service these fast-food giants provide.

A Nation of Fast Food Lovers: How Much Are South Africans Spending?

When it comes to spending, South Africans don’t hold back. The report found that an average customer earning R25,000 per month spends around R775 monthly on fast food — that’s more than the cost of groceries. Interestingly, those with higher earnings tend to spend more. South Africans earning over R50,000 shell out an average of R1,000 each month, and during holiday periods, that spending can rise to R1,300.

The local consumer is savvy, though. They expect consistent taste and good value for money, with combo deals typically priced under R100. The most popular fast food purchases are made around paydays and weekends, with Fridays and Saturdays seeing the highest volume of sales.

Trouble Ahead for US Brands: Is This a Local Advantage?

The recent introduction of the Trump tariffs threatens to put a strain on US-based brands like McDonald’s and Burger King. As import prices rise, many customers may start looking for more affordable options. This shift could present significant opportunities for local brands like Steers and Nando’s, who have a strong understanding of local tastes and have built loyal followings over the years.

What Drives South Africans to Fast Food?

According to Mordor, the key drivers for choosing fast food are taste consistency and brand credibility. More than 70% of consumers say these factors play a crucial role in their decision-making. However, negative sentiment towards brands often arises from issues such as late deliveries, poor service, and small portion sizes — problems that have started to plague some international chains.

Fast food is more than just a meal; it’s an important part of South African culture. Whether it’s gathering with friends for pizza or grabbing a quick burger on the way home, fast food is a staple in the busy lives of many South Africans. As the industry continues to evolve, local brands will likely play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of fast food in the country.

The Road Ahead for Fast Food in South Africa

As the fast food market continues to grow, US brands will need to adapt to the changing dynamics of the South African market, particularly with rising tariffs. Meanwhile, local chains like Steers and Nando’s have a chance to capitalize on this shift, offering more personalized experiences and localized flavors. As consumers continue to demand value, consistency, and convenience, the future of South African fast food is set to be an exciting one — but it could be one where homegrown brands take center stage.
