Absa Rewards Customers Can Now Earn Up to 60% Back at Shoprite and Checkers

Absa just joined the Shoprite rewards party – and the cashback is real
South Africans who’ve been feeling the pinch at the till might finally catch a bit of a break. Absa has just teamed up with Shoprite to offer customers up to 60% cashback when they shop at Shoprite, Checkers, and on-demand delivery app Sixty60.
And it couldn’t come at a better time.
Big banks, big retail: the cashback battle heats up
The move comes six months after Shoprite’s deal with FNB’s popular eBucks programme came to an end, leaving a gap that Absa has now swooped in to fill. This partnership adds to Shoprite’s growing loyalty arsenal, following similar deals with Discovery in August 2024 and Standard Bank earlier this year.
From 16 August to 15 October 2025, Absa Rewards members can earn up to 60% cashback on eligible purchases when using qualifying Absa debit or credit cards. After the launch phase, customers can still earn up to 30% back depending on their rewards tier. Cashback is paid out monthly and can be used however customers choose — whether for groceries, school supplies or that long-delayed savings plan.
Why this matters for the everyday South African
Shoprite and Checkers are the top retail destinations for Absa customers, according to the bank. By aligning with where their clients already spend, Absa is reinforcing its brand promise of being “a bank that meets customers where they are.”
And let’s be honest — with rising food costs and monthly budgets stretched thinner than ever, cashback on essentials like bread, milk, and baby formula feels less like a loyalty perk and more like a lifeline.
Over the years, Absa Rewards has paid out over R6.6 billion, with one lucky customer even becoming a “rewards millionaire”. Many South Africans are using these cashbacks to lighten their financial load — from covering airtime to helping family through tough patches.
What about Sixty60?
One of the more exciting aspects of the deal is that it includes Sixty60, Checkers’ rapid grocery delivery service. This means you can earn cashback even when you shop from your couch — no app required thanks to its new web platform.
As the convenience economy booms, banks and retailers are racing to stay in step with how South Africans shop. And with this move, Absa is sending a clear message: it’s in it for the long haul — and for the everyday spender.
Why this matters
As cost-of-living pressures mount, partnerships like these could help shift the needle — not only for consumers, but for the loyalty landscape in South Africa as a whole. Absa’s move signals a bold play in the growing cashback wars, and for once, everyday shoppers might just come out on top.
