French flair meets African football fever

Football fans across Africa have a reason to celebrate. SuperSport, through its parent company MultiChoice, has officially added live French Ligue 1 matches to its broadcast schedule, a move made possible by its new partnership with the league’s owner, Canal+.

This is the first major addition to DStv’s sports offering since Canal+ took control of MultiChoice last month, and it marks the beginning of a new era for subscribers hungry for more international content.

From Paris Saint-Germain to Marseille, Lyon and Monaco, the Ligue 1 McDonald’s broadcast brings some of Europe’s most exciting football directly to African screens every weekend.

A premium football experience for local fans

SuperSport will air up to three Ligue 1 matches every weekend, available across DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv platforms. Matches will feature football icons like Ousmane Dembélé and rising stars such as Désiré Doué, alongside established clubs that dominate the French league.

The first match, Paris Saint-Germain versus RC Strasbourg, kicked off on a Friday evening broadcast, setting the tone for a thrilling season of top-tier French football on African soil.

Rendani Ramovha, MultiChoice’s English sports content director, said the addition was a clear reflection of the company’s commitment to bringing premium sports to African audiences. “Football is more than a game on this continent. Broadcasting a prestigious league such as Ligue 1 adds immense value to our subscribers. The calibre of talent now available on SuperSport speaks for itself.”

Canal+ and MultiChoice: A powerful new partnership

The Ligue 1 deal is part of a larger vision by Canal+ to expand its entertainment footprint across Africa. The French media giant has the biggest library of European content in the world and now plans to share more of it with DStv audiences.

David Mignot, CEO of Canal+ Africa, recently revealed that the company produces around 4,000 hours of African content annually, in up to 15 languages. Combined with MultiChoice’s 6,000 hours of local content, this collaboration will deliver nearly 10,000 hours of programming per year, spanning as many as 35 languages.

“We are building a catalogue of more than 100,000 hours over the next decade,” Mignot explained, noting that the goal is to make both African and European stories accessible to wider audiences through dubbing and rescripting.

What viewers can expect next

Canal+ CEO and chairman Maxime Sadaa confirmed that the company is also developing a “super app” to unify its platforms, combining DStv, GOtv, Canal+, and Showmax into one integrated hub. The app will make it easier for users to stream all their favourite shows and sports from one place, a move designed to rival global streaming competitors.

Canal+ already partners with heavyweights like Apple TV+, Netflix, HBO Max, and Paramount+ in other regions, and similar bundles could soon reach African customers.

For DStv subscribers, this means a richer entertainment catalogue, more languages, and even greater convenience, all while keeping local content at the heart of it.

With French football now in the mix, SuperSport’s weekend schedule has never looked better. From Bloemfontein to Bamako, viewers can catch world-class players and European rivalries right from their living rooms.
