What The Canal+ Takeover Means For You and Other DSTV Supscibers

It’s official: DStv’s parent company, MultiChoice Group, is now fully owned by the French media powerhouse Canal+. After months of regulatory approvals and corporate negotiations, the takeover marks the beginning of a new chapter for one of Africa’s most influential entertainment brands.
But what does this really mean for DStv subscribers across South Africa?
A New Era For African Television
Canal+, which already owned 45% of MultiChoice’s shares, received final approval from the Competition Tribunal to acquire the remaining stake a move that consolidates control over DStv, GOtv, and Showmax.
The partnership merges two entertainment giants: Canal+’s global reach and MultiChoice’s strong African presence. MultiChoice described the deal as a “joining of powerhouses” dedicated to delivering local and international content that resonates with African audiences.
For viewers, it’s a signal that the South African broadcasting scene is evolving to compete with global streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+.
No Immediate Changes For DStv Customers
Despite the buzz, MultiChoice insists that subscribers won’t notice any major changes just yet.
“For our customers, employees, suppliers and partners – nothing changes for now,” the group stated
That means your current packages, pricing, and channel line-ups remain the same at least in the short term.
However, with Canal+ now fully in charge, future updates could see expanded international offerings or new cross-platform integrations between DStv and Showmax, especially as Canal+ looks to strengthen its streaming footprint across Africa.
Bringing Back The Magic: DStv’s Comeback Plans
MultiChoice has faced subscriber losses in recent years, driven by economic pressures and growing competition from digital streaming.
To help reignite its customer base, the company is slashing decoder prices. Starting 1 November, DStv HD decoders will cost 30% less in retail and over 40% less through the new online DStv Store.
The goal? To make reconnecting and joining easier and more affordable a clear nod to households that may have drifted away due to rising costs.
What Comes Next
While the immediate future looks steady, the Canal+ era could reshape DStv’s long-term strategy especially in how it blends African storytelling with global partnerships.
If the merger delivers on its promise, viewers can expect a more connected, content-rich experience that keeps African audiences at the centre of the story.
For now, though, the message from MultiChoice is clear: sit back, enjoy your free weekend, and get ready for the next chapter in African entertainment.
