Chaos In The Heart Of Durban

What started as an ordinary Tuesday morning in Durban’s busy CBD turned into a scene of panic and heartbreak when gunfire erupted along Argyle Road near Umgeni Road. Paramedics and police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a shooting just before 9:30am.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the vehicle involved had been riddled with bullets, leaving both occupants severely wounded. Witnesses described the moment as “chaotic,” with drivers abandoning their cars and fleeing in fear.

One Man Killed, Another Fighting For His Life

Paramedics found two men inside the bullet-ridden vehicle. Both were believed to be in their 30s and 40s. Tragically, the passenger succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

The driver, who sustained several gunshot wounds, was stabilised on-site by advanced life support paramedics before being rushed to hospital in critical condition.

“The scene was absolute chaos,” said Jamieson. “It was clear the car had been targeted. We worked swiftly to stabilise the surviving victim before transferring him for urgent care.”

Police Launch Investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the shooting. Officers cordoned off Argyle Road, temporarily closing the route from the beachfront towards Ridge Road as forensic teams combed through evidence.

Jamieson urged motorists to avoid the area until police complete their investigation. “This was not a random act. The level of aggression points to a planned attack,” he noted.

Arrest In Unrelated Murder Case

In a separate incident, KwaZulu-Natal police announced the arrest of a murder suspect who had been on the run since February 2023. According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, detectives from Durban Central Police Station arrested the suspect on Friday.

The man is accused of killing the mother of his children in Volksrust, Mpumalanga, and was allegedly planning to harm his children at the time of his arrest. “This arrest brings relief to a family that has waited for justice for over a year,” said Netshiunda.

A City On Edge

Durban has faced a troubling spike in violent crimes in recent months, with several high-profile shootings reported across the city. Residents have expressed concern over growing lawlessness in what was once one of South Africa’s busiest coastal hubs.

As investigators piece together what happened on Argyle Road, the community is left shaken another reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in the heart of the city.
