A new landmark has taken root in Johannesburg’s bustling Waterfall corridor. The highly anticipated Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre has officially opened its doors, injecting R600 million and a fresh, community-focused energy into one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
This isn’t just another mall. Developed by Century Property Developments, the 27,000-square-metre centre is designed as a social and lifestyle destination, strategically positioned to serve the thriving communities of Waterfall, Kyalami, Midrand, and Sunninghill.
The name itself is a tribute to local history, drawing from the working mushroom farm that once neighboured the original Waterval Farm. The architectural design cleverly nods to this heritage, with striking Japanese cedar panelling that evokes the form of a mushroom cap.
But the vision is firmly forward-looking. The centre is built around a central community piazza, creating an inviting space for people to gather, not just shop. With over 50 curated retail and dining options, it aims to be a daily convenience and a weekend destination.
Shoppers will find a robust and thoughtful tenant mix. For groceries and essentials, the centre is anchored by a large Checkers supermarket and a Checkers Hyper. Fashion seekers can browse Factorie, @home, and Pep, while home and lifestyle needs are met at Pep Home, Dial-a-Bed, and PNA.
The dining scene is a major highlight, designed to cater to every taste. From quick bites at Wimpy and Seattle Coffee to the acclaimed flavours of The Whippet, which has expanded from its beloved Linden home. The lineup is still growing, with Butcher Boys Prime Steakhouse and Luna Lusa among the exciting names set to open soon.
Recognising the challenges of modern South Africa, the Mushroom Farm was built with smart solutions in mind. A key feature is a massive 2.1 MVA solar plant, ensuring that trading can continue uninterrupted during load-sheddinga critical advantage for both retailers and shoppers.
The green initiatives extend to water harvesting, low-flow plumbing, and an on-site recycling facility. Furthermore, major road upgrades to Allandale Road and the K73 were coordinated with the mall’s construction, easing the potential traffic burden and improving access for everyone.
The development was also a major job creator, generating over 2,100 positions during construction with a focus on local labour and suppliers. The result is more than a shopping centre; it’s a new, sustainable, and vibrant heart for a growing community, finally open for business.
