Walmart’s South African Onslaught Continues: Second Store Opens at Fourways Mall
The American retail giant is wasting no time. Just days after its successful debut at Clearwater Mall, Walmart has confirmed the location and opening date for its second South African store: Fourways Mall in Johannesburg, on Friday, 28 November 2025.
The rapid expansion signals Walmart’s serious intent to capture a significant share of the South African retail market with its direct, fully-branded stores, moving beyond its longstanding presence through the Massmart group.
A Blueprint for Success
Buoyed by what it described as a “massive success” at Clearwater Mall, Walmart is replicating its winning formula at Fourways. The store will open its doors at 08:00 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by store manager Lunghani Lincoln Mathebula.
The opening has created 80 permanent jobs, including opportunities for young, first-time job seekers, providing a welcome boost to the local economy.
Shoppers can expect the same range of popular imported goods that flew off the shelves at Clearwater. The sought-after lineup includes:
-
American Drinks: Fanta Strawberry, Fanta Peach, and Dr Pepper.
-
US Candies: Pop-Tarts, Swedish Fish, Nerds, and Sour Patch Kids.
-
Premium Meats: Sparta marbled sirloin steaks and Deli-Co lamb lollies.
-
Exclusive Toys: Fuggler plush toys and collectable Hot Wheels, including the coveted 80th Anniversary Kombi.
The Low-Price Promise
Walmart is using its South African rollout to introduce its global “everyday low price” strategy. Unlike competitors who rely on weekly specials, the focus is on keeping prices consistently low across a wide range of products, from fresh food and groceries to electronics, clothing, and homeware.
This strategy appears to be resonating. Early price comparisons have shown Walmart’s basket to be significantly cheaper than major local rivals, a key advantage in a market where consumers are increasingly price-conscious.
For a sneak peek of the Fourways store’s offerings, shoppers can download the Walmart Africa app, which allows for product browsing and promises delivery within 60 minutes for those living within a 5km radius.
The back-to-back store openings mark a new, aggressive chapter for Walmart in South Africa, suggesting the retail landscape is in for a formidable new competitor dedicated to the art of the low price.
