Festive Season Alert: Over Two Million SASSA-Postbank Clients Must Switch Accounts by Year-End
SASSA-Postbank Clients Face Festive Season Crunch: Act Fast to Avoid Grant Delays
The festive season is meant for joy, but for over two million South Africans receiving social grants through Postbank, 2025 is ending on a stressful note. That’s because the Master Service Agreement (MSA) between SASSA and Postbank officially expires on 31 December, meaning beneficiaries must switch to a new bank account to continue receiving payments.
For many, this is déjà vu: the year has already seen the infamous Gold-to-Black card swap debacle, which left thousands frustrated with long queues and IT hiccups. Now, beneficiaries face a similarly daunting taskbut SASSA insists no one will go without their grant.
Why the Urgency?
Back in September 2025, the Gauteng High Court granted a temporary three-month extension of the SASSA-Postbank contract. The agency promised that this would prevent service interruptions while they worked on a smoother process.
Yet, civil advocacy groups worry that:
-
Service fees could hit beneficiaries transferring their funds.
-
Postbank’s aging IT system may struggle to handle millions of account closures simultaneously.
Despite these concerns, SASSA CEO Temba Matlou reassured the public:
“All eligible SASSA-Postbank clients will continue receiving their grants. Termination of the MSA has no bearing on payments. Beneficiaries may receive their grants into any account of their choosing.”
Still, Matlou urges clients to act immediately to avoid any last-minute delays or complications.
Step-by-Step Guide: Switching Your SASSA Account
To ensure you continue receiving your grant without interruption:
-
Open a new bank account at a bank of your choice. Most banks will require you to visit a branch in person.

-
Your SASSA-Postbank card.
-

Public Reaction and Concerns
On social media, many SASSA clients expressed frustration:
“Here we go again… another Postbank nightmare right before Christmas!”
Others urged prompt action:
“Don’t wait until the last week! Go to SASSA now and switch accounts if you haven’t already.”
The public’s anxiety is understandable. The Gold-to-Black swap earlier this year left many elderly and disabled beneficiaries waiting for hours with no helpa scenario both SASSA and Postbank are keen to avoid repeating.
While the deadline looms, authorities remain adamant that no one will miss a grant. However, success depends on proactive beneficiaries. With proper planning, long queues and festive-season stress can be minimizedbut time is running out.
For those yet to act, the message is simple: open a new bank account, update SASSA, and don’t wait for December 31.
