A security officer’s instincts turned a routineand potentially deadlyencounter on its head in the early hours of Monday morning in Isando. What began as two men asking for directions escalated in seconds into a life-or-death struggle, leaving one suspect dead and another in hospital under police guard.

According to SAPS Ekurhuleni North District spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the security officer was approached by the two men. Growing suspicious of their intentions, his vigilance was validated when one of the men suddenly produced a firearm and pointed it at him.

Quick Draw, Swift Response

The officer, armed with his company-issued weapon, reacted instantly. He drew and fired at the assailants. One suspect was struck in the upper body and fell to the ground. The second suspect was also shot but managed to flee the scene. However, his escape was short-lived. Members of the Edenvale SAPS later located him and returned him to the scene.

A Gun with a Filed-Off Serial Number

Paramedics certified the first suspect dead at the scene. Police recovered a firearm in his possession, a sinister detail of which was that its serial number had been filed off, a common tactic used by criminals to obscure a weapon’s history.

The second suspect, a 30-year-old man, sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remains under police guard. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder for further investigation. The incident underscores the volatile dangers faced by private security personnel and the split-second decisions that define such high-risk encounters. For the officer involved, a simple request for directions became a brush with mortality and a test of training and resolve that ended with two armed suspects neutralised.
