Your weekly Sixty60 order is about to change

If you already rely on Checkers Sixty60 to save you from traffic, queues, and forgotten groceries, 2026 is shaping up to be a very good year. Shoprite has confirmed that it plans to further expand what South Africans can buy on the on-demand platform, moving well beyond groceries and into a wider range of everyday essentials.

The message from the retailer is clear. Convenience matters, but value still comes first.

More than groceries in your sixty-minute slot

Shoprite says the next phase of growth for Checkers Sixty60 will focus on expanding its general merchandise range. This includes everyday household items that traditionally meant a separate trip to a store or an all-day wait for delivery.

Alongside this, customers can expect stronger offerings in speciality pet food and a bigger push into health and wellness products. These are categories where demand has grown steadily, especially among urban shoppers who want reliable same-day delivery rather than courier delays.

What makes this shift notable is that Shoprite is extending same-day delivery to these categories using precise sixty-minute time slots. That means no more sitting at home all day waiting for a delivery window to open.

Why Shoprite is not worried about new competitors

With global players like Walmart eyeing South Africa’s on-demand delivery space, competition is heating up. Shoprite has publicly welcomed this, saying competition ultimately benefits consumers.

Behind the confidence is scale. Around 80 percent of South Africans live within five kilometres of a Shoprite or Checkers store. Instead of seeing physical stores as a liability, the group has turned them into its biggest advantage. Orders are picked in store, cutting down on warehousing delays and allowing deliveries to focus only on the final short trip to your door.

This last five-kilometre efficiency is something Shoprite believes international e-commerce players simply cannot match locally.

The numbers behind the hype

Checkers Sixty60 had a standout financial year in 2025. Sales jumped by 47.7 percent to R18.9 billion in the six months ending 29 June. The service also expanded rapidly, adding 155 new locations to reach 694 stores nationwide, up from 539 a year earlier.

Performance metrics back up the growth story. In 2025, the platform achieved a 96.8 percent first-choice fulfilment rate and 94 percent on-time deliveries, even during peak periods. These are the kinds of figures that build trust in a service that promises speed and freshness.

Price remains a big part of the appeal. Shoprite says around 5,000 Sixty60 products were cheaper in 2025 than in 2024. Xtra Savings members also saved more than double during the 2025 Early Black Friday promotion compared to the previous year.

From lockdown lifeline to daily habit

Launched in 2019, Checkers Sixty60 became a household name during the 2020 lockdowns, when demand for home delivery exploded. What started as a convenience quickly turned into a habit for many South Africans, especially in cities like Johannesburg, where time is often in shorter supply than money.

Social media reactions over the past year have reflected this shift. Shoppers regularly share screenshots of fast deliveries, surprise general merchandise finds, and price wins, reinforcing the brand’s reputation through everyday user experiences rather than flashy campaigns.

What this means for shoppers in 2026

The planned expansion signals that Checkers Sixty60 is no longer just a grocery app. It is positioning itself as a one-stop, same-day retail service that fits into how South Africans actually live.

For shoppers, this means fewer errands, fewer delivery apps, and more value packed into a single sixty-minute window. If Shoprite delivers on its plans, your next Sixty60 order might include pet food, wellness essentials, and household gear, all arriving before your kettle has even boiled twice.
