A 38-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of his wife in the Vaal area, after her body was discovered in a recycling bag.

The suspect was apprehended in Meyerton last week and is expected to appear before the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 9 March 2026.

The Case

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arrest and urged the public to continue working with law enforcement.

“The management of the South African Police Service in Gauteng would like to thank the community for their assistance in apprehending the suspects.”

She stressed the broader societal responsibility in combating gender-based violence.

“Gender Based Violence and femicide affects everyone, and it needs all of us to stand together and denounce it in our communities.”

The public is urged to report any criminal activities:

Cape Town Shooting

Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, four people have been shot and killed at an informal settlement in Philippi East.

The shooting occurred on Saturday night in the Marikana informal settlement.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said:

“Three men and a woman were shot dead and another person injured in the Marikana informal settlement in a shooting incident on Saturday evening.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two gunmen entered the yard at approximately 21:30 on Disa Road and fired several shots. A woman who was injured during the shooting left before police arrived.”

Murder and attempted murder dockets have been opened. No arrests have been made.

The Bottom Line

Two communities. Two horrific crimes. One message from police: work with us.

In the Vaal, a man will face court for an act of unspeakable violence against his wife. In Philippi East, four families are mourningand killers are still on the loose.

GBV affects everyone. So does gun violence. And the only way to stop it is together.
