Twelve Years, No Answers: Final MH370 Search Ends Empty-Handed
Twelve years after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 vanished from radar screens, the latest search has concludedwith nothing to show for it.
The Boeing 777, carrying 239 people, disappeared on 8 March 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It remains one of aviation’s greatest enduring mysteries.
The Search
The latest search, led by exploration firm Ocean Infinity, began in December and scoured an area of around 15,000 square kilometres in the southern Indian Ocean.
It concluded on 23 Januarywith no findings.
Malaysia’s transport ministry confirmed that efforts “have not yielded any findings that confirm the location of the aircraft wreckage.”
Ocean Infinity deployed autonomous underwater drones capable of diving to depths of up to 6,000 metres. The company conducted previous unsuccessful searches in 2018, as did Australia for three years until January 2017.
The Families’ Pain
On the 12th anniversary of the disappearance, families of the Chinese passengers published an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
They thanked him for initiating the latest search, but expressed deep frustration at the lack of communication.
“Since 15 January this year, families have received no further search briefings whatsoever.”
“Over the past two months, we have repeatedly contacted Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport through both Malaysia Airlines and the Chinese government, yet have received no response.”
They also spoke of the emotional toll: “For 12 years, we have received virtually no genuine psychological support.”
“We ask for little: only to be seen, to be heard, and to be treated as individuals with emotions and dignity.”
The Victims
Two-thirds of the passengers were Chinese. The others included Malaysians, Indonesians, Australians, Indians, Americans, Dutch, and French nationals.
What’s Next?
The families are expected to be received by China’s foreign ministry on Monday, as they are every year, before visiting the Malaysian embassy in Beijing to deliver the letter for Anwar.
The Bottom Line
Twelve years. Multiple searches. Millions spent. No plane. No bodies. No answers.
For the families, the pain never ends. And now, the final search has endedleaving them with nothing but questions that may never be answered.
