Middle East conflict escalates as missile strikes spread across the region
The conflict gripping the Middle East shows little sign of slowing down, with new missile strikes, political developments in Iran and growing economic ripple effects around the world.
From the Gulf to Lebanon and Israel, the situation has intensified over the past 24 hours, drawing in regional forces and raising global concern about how far the fighting could spread.
Here’s a breakdown of the latest developments shaping the conflict.
Trump says ending the war would be a joint decision
US President Donald Trump has indicated that the timing of an end to the war would depend on discussions between Washington and Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking to the news outlet The Times of Israel, Trump said the decision would be “mutual”, although the United States would ultimately make the final call.
“I’ll make a decision at the right time,” he said, adding that discussions between the two governments were ongoing.
Both Israeli and American officials have framed their military campaign as an effort to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Some officials have also suggested the conflict could ultimately lead to political change within Iran.
Iran names a new supreme leader
In a major political shift, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late supreme leader Ali Khamenei, has been selected to succeed his father.
The decision was made by Iran’s powerful Assembly of Experts, which appoints the country’s supreme leader.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps quickly pledged loyalty to the new leader, signalling a rapid consolidation of power.
Senior Iranian officials praised the decision as legal and legitimate, while Iran-aligned groups in the region including Yemen’s Houthi movement welcomed the appointment.
But the announcement also drew threats from Israel, which has previously vowed to target any successor to Iran’s leadership.
Iran and Israel exchange new missile attacks
The conflict intensified further after Iran launched missiles toward Israel following the leadership announcement.
Israeli emergency responders reported that one woman was injured during the attack.
In response, Israel’s military said it carried out a new wave of strikes against what it described as government infrastructure targets in central Iran.
The exchange marks another escalation in a conflict that has already spread across several countries in the region.
Civilian casualties reported in the Gulf
The violence has also affected countries beyond Israel and Iran.
In Bahrain, authorities said an Iranian drone attack struck the island of Sitra, injuring 32 civilians, including several children.
Four of the victims were reported to be in serious condition.
Elsewhere in the Gulf, explosions were reported in Doha, while missile alerts and attacks were reported across Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
Saudi civil defence officials said a projectile attack killed two people and injured 12.
Fighting intensifies in Lebanon
Meanwhile, clashes have also erupted in Lebanon, where the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah says it engaged Israeli troops who landed by helicopter near the Syrian border.
Two Hezbollah sources claimed their fighters downed an Israeli helicopter during the confrontation, although the Israeli military has not confirmed the report.
Israel also announced that it had carried out strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in the capital, Beirut.
US evacuates staff from Saudi Arabia
As the conflict spreads, the United States Department of State has ordered non-essential government employees and their families to leave Saudi Arabia.
Officials said the move was a precaution due to growing safety risks in the region.
The evacuation highlights increasing concern among Western governments about the possibility of a broader regional war.
Oil prices surge and markets react
The conflict is also sending shockwaves through the global economy.
Both major crude oil benchmarks, Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate, have surged above $100 per barrel for the first time in nearly four years.
Since the start of the conflict, oil prices have climbed sharply, with WTI rising more than 75% and Brent gaining more than 60%.
Stock markets in Japan and South Korea fell in early trading on Monday as investors reacted to rising energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
Trump, however, dismissed concerns about the price spike, saying on social media that it was “a very small price to pay” if Iran’s nuclear ambitions were stopped.
Allegations of banned weapons use
Adding to the controversy, Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using white phosphorus in a strike on the southern Lebanese town of Yohmor.
White phosphorus is a highly controversial substance that ignites on contact with oxygen and can cause severe burns, fires and respiratory damage.
Human rights groups have long argued that its use in civilian areas could violate international law.
Global leaders call for restraint
Amid the escalating violence, Emmanuel Macron confirmed he had spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Macron urged Iran to halt attacks on other countries in the region.
The call marked the first known contact between a Western leader and Pezeshkian since the conflict erupted.
A conflict with global consequences
As the fighting spreads across multiple countries, analysts warn the conflict is no longer just a regional issue.
Rising oil prices, military casualties and widening attacks suggest the war could reshape geopolitics far beyond the Middle East.
For countries around the world, including South Africa, which relies heavily on imported fuel, the consequences could soon be felt far from the battlefield.
