Eskom will carry out an eight-hour planned power outage in Chiawelo, Soweto, on Tuesday, 21 July, shutting electricity supply from 09:00 to 18:00 to allow maintenance work on the distribution network.

Who will be affected and why

The power utility said the interruption will affect customers in Chiawelo 1, 2 and 3. The outage is part of scheduled maintenance intended to service distribution power lines.

“The power outage will affect customers in Chiawelo 1, 2 and 3 on Tuesday, 21 July, from 09:00 – 18:00. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” the power utility said.

Safety and contingency

Eskom urged customers to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the outage for safety. The utility also warned that the planned maintenance may not proceed if circumstances beyond its control arise.

“Eskom apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance. Should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated,” the power utility added.

What residents should know

The outage is scheduled to last from 09:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday, 21 July. Customers in the named Chiawelo sections should prepare for the temporary loss of supply and follow standard safety precautions around electrical equipment while the work is carried out.

Editor’s note: Article updated to correct outage duration to eight hours (09:00–18:00) to match source.
