Self-guided birding at Melville Koppies and Wits Archaeology Reserve: an evergreen guide

Access, trails and costs at Melville Koppies

Melville Koppies offers multiple trail options and maps. According to Melville Koppies (Friends of Melville Koppies):

• Melville Koppies CENTRAL is always locked and has controlled access only for people on hikes or walks on Sundays between 8:00am and 11:30am (except Christmas and New Year).
• Melville Koppies EAST is open daily for walks and socialised dogs are welcome.
• Melville Koppies WEST is open daily but it is advisable to walk only on scheduled walks.
• Parking: Secure free parking is available opposite the Koppies’ entrance at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia; walk across Judith Road to the Koppies’ entrance.

Trail and tour options include a 5km scenic hiking trail, a self-guided Heritage trail with maps and notes, and guided tours such as 90-minute tours starting at 8:00am. There are also longer group hikes on specified Sundays and occasional children’s activities. Maps of trails are provided on site.

Costs for activities, as stated by Melville Koppies (Friends of Melville Koppies), include: R100 per adult and R50 under 18; free under 5 years; booked guided tours R100 per person; and a 12-month Sunday Season Ticket for R500 per person and R250 under 18. Rules, safety and etiquette

Wits Archaeology Reserve: approach with contact

The Wits Archaeology Reserve is less publicly documented for birdwatching.
