21-year-old stabbed to death during Spring Day water fight in Refilwe, Cullinan
A 21-year-old man, Tshepang Nyathi, was allegedly stabbed during a Spring Day water fight in Refilwe, Cullinan. A 53-year-old suspect was arrested after being detained by the community.
Tshepang Nyathi, a 21-year-old man from Extension 3, Refilwe in Cullinan, died after being allegedly stabbed during a Spring Day water celebration on Tuesday, 1 September.
What happened
Gauteng police said a group of young people were celebrating Spring Day by pouring water over passing pedestrians when a dispute broke out after they attempted to pour water over a man. During the confrontation, a 53-year-old man allegedly stabbed Nyathi and fled the scene.
Community response and arrest
Members of the community apprehended the suspect a short distance away and, according to the police account, he was assaulted before officers arrived. Nyathi was declared dead at the scene. The suspect was taken to a local clinic for medical attention and was subsequently placed under arrest.
Legal process and investigation
The suspect, who police say is Nyathi’s neighbour, is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 3 September facing a charge of murder. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, the Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said.
“The police urge members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to allow the police to deal with criminal incidents through lawful processes.”
Broader concerns
The report noted that Spring Day traditionally a children’s pastime of playfully spraying one another with water has in recent years increasingly involved adults. Videos of children splashing water at pedestrians, cars and delivery bikes in Gauteng have been circulating on social media, raising concerns about whether the practice is becoming more reckless and dangerous.
