Sanral begins three-month N1 northbound diversions in Midrand for K60 Bridge construction

Sanral has put long-term lane diversions in place on the N1 northbound in Midrand to allow for construction of the new K60 Bridge. The temporary traffic measures run from August 14 to November 13 and cover the stretch from km 50.4N to km 52.4N.

What drivers can expect

Traffic will be routed through a temporary lane configuration while construction takes place within a protected work area. Sanral said a 200m transition area will guide traffic from the normal lane layout into the temporary accommodation, and a further 200m transition area will guide traffic back into the original lanes beyond the work zone.

The project design includes a 100m buffer zone between live traffic and the work area for safety, and a 100m work zone where construction activities will be undertaken.

Reason and management

The temporary lane measures are required to facilitate the construction of the K60 Bridge over the N1-20 freeway. The bridge project is managed by the Gauteng department of roads and transport.

Progress Hlahla, Sanral Gauteng provincial head, urged road users to plan their trips and to adhere to traffic accommodation signage and flag persons’ advanced warnings.

“Adhere to the traffic accommodation signage and the flag persons’ advanced warnings. It is not only for your own safety, but also that of the construction personnel on site.”

Sanral apologised for any inconvenience and said it remains committed to improving the safety and quality of national roads.

Impact

The agency warned motorists that the diversions will affect northbound traffic through Midrand for the duration of the works.
