South African Mint launches 2026 Martial Eagle coin collection

The South African Mint has revealed its 2026 Martial Eagle collection, the second chapter in a seven-coin series called The Odyssey of the Sky that celebrates Africa’s birdlife. The release includes limited-edition coins struck in 24-carat gold and 999 fine silver, and follows the 2025 Bateleur Eagle, the series’ first release.

Design and symbolism

The collection pays tribute to the martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), described in the Mint’s announcement as Africa’s largest eagle, with a wingspan that can exceed two metres and eyesight eight times sharper than that of humans. The bird is presented as a symbol of focus, strength and authority.

A recurring geometric African pattern frames each coin. The Mint said this motif represents the enduring bond between humanity and the natural world and mirrors the symmetry and precision of the minting craft.

Coin specifications and designs

The 2026 range comprises seven limited-edition coins produced in two metals:

• 24-carat gold: a ¼ oz coin limited to 1 000 pieces, a 1 oz coin limited to 500, and a 5 oz coin limited to 50.
• 999 fine silver: a 1 oz coin limited to 5 000, a 2 oz coin limited to 5 000, a 5 oz coin limited to 500, and a 1 kg coin limited to 100.

The gold coins feature a detailed close-up portrait of the martial eagle on the reverse. The fine-silver coins depict the eagle perched on a branch with its wings spread. All coins carry the inscriptions “The Odyssey” and “Martial Eagle”, alongside the denomination and hallmark.

Special sets and cultural notes

The release includes two exclusive Krugerrand sets, each pairing an Odyssey of the Sky coin with a Krugerrand bearing a martial eagle privy mark. One set is in gold and the other in silver, and both are exclusive to the 2026 release.

The Mint also highlighted the martial eagle’s role in African folklore, noting its association with guarding, vigilance and protection.
