Light aircraft crashes at busy Midrand intersection, injuring two

On Tuesday, 8 September 2026, a light aircraft crashed at the intersection of the R101, New Road, and Old Pretoria Main Road in Glen Austin, Midrand, causing severe traffic disruptions.

Officials head to the scene

The Johannesburg Metro Police said that the Emergency Management Service reported to the scene to attend to the aircraft crash. While the management service attended the scene, a second motor vehicle accident occurred at the same location. This then complicated the rescue efforts and caused further traffic congestion.

The JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said police officers were soon dispatched after the motor vehicle crash to help with traffic management, secure the scene, and implement road diversions while emergency responders focused on their operation.

Confirmed injuries

The EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi explained that two people were injured in the plane crash. He stated that the EMS team treated them at the scene in private ambulances. No further updates on the two parties’ conditions have been shared.

The Citizen reports that a man and a woman were found in the aircraft, and a bystander helped them out before emergency services arrived on the scene.

Superintendent Fihla said there were no confirmed injuries or fatalities sustained from the motor vehicle crash. Officials added that more information would be released once the details have been verified.

Police investigation

Mulaudzi shared that both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the local Grand Central Fire reported to the scene, along with other relevant authorities, to conduct an investigation into the aircraft crash.
