South Africans looking for smarter ways to book flights just got a major lift. Absa has officially launched its Travel Hub inside the Absa Banking App, giving loyal cardholders and Rewards members the chance to save big with discounts of up to 100% on the base fare of flights.

The platform, rolled out on 8 September 2025 in partnership with online travel company Travelstart, marks Absa’s bold step into the travel booking space.

Making Travel More Accessible

For many South Africans, travel is becoming increasingly expensive. Rising airfare and fluctuating exchange rates have made even local getaways a luxury. Against this backdrop, Absa’s new offering feels like a game-changer.

Alicia Raynard, Executive of Absa Rewards, explained that the initiative is about more than flights. “Travel is about the stories that bring people together. By offering up to 100% discounts, we’re ensuring those moments are within reach for more of our clients.”

Unlike traditional cashback models where savings are only realised later, Absa’s discount is applied upfront. That means Rewards members see the benefit instantly when booking, based on their Rewards Tier and Absa card type.

Not Just For The Elite

One of the striking aspects of Absa’s Travel Hub is its inclusivity. The offer extends to a wide range of customers from students to Private Wealth clients making travel more rewarding no matter where you are in life.

And with more than two million logins on the Absa Banking App every day, the reach is enormous. What started as a microsite in 2022 has now found its permanent home inside the app, giving users a one-stop space to manage finances and travel.

A First For The Market

Absa’s move also highlights how banks are reimagining rewards programmes. The financial sector has traditionally offered cashback, loyalty points, or retail discounts. But by linking travel directly into its app, Absa is embedding lifestyle benefits where clients already spend most of their digital time.

Travelstart’s Group Chief Commercial Officer, Mikha’il Ernest, called the partnership “both simple and powerful” instant, upfront travel discounts at scale. For South Africans, this kind of seamless financial-meets-travel experience is still new, and Absa is setting a precedent that other banks may feel pressured to follow.

What This Means For Travellers

Absa Rewards Travel Hub is not just about flying for less it’s about how banking and travel are beginning to overlap in South Africa. By placing discounts directly in the hands of clients, Absa is tapping into a cultural truth: travel isn’t just a luxury, it’s part of how people connect, escape, and celebrate milestones.

With summer holidays and festive travel planning around the corner, this launch couldn’t have come at a better time. For now, Absa clients might just have the biggest advantage in the skies.
