CATL Shares Surge in Hong Kong Debut, Cementing Its Global EV Battery Leadership

China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (CATL), the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, experienced a strong debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with shares jumping by as much as 18% on the first day of trading. The company raised nearly HK$35.7 billion (approximately $4.55 billion) in what has become the largest initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong so far this year.
CATL manufactures over a third of all EV batteries worldwide and supplies major carmakers including Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota. Its IPO was closely watched due to ongoing US-China trade tensions, which have significantly impacted the global automotive supply chain.
Despite being added by the US Department of Defense to a list of companies allegedly linked to China’s military—a claim CATL denies as a mistake—the company remains confident in its growth. Analysts believe the direct impact of US tariffs on CATL will be limited, given that nearly 70% of its revenue comes from China’s robust EV market.
Founded in 2011 in Ningde, China, CATL has grown rapidly alongside the rise of the EV industry. It now employs over 100,000 people and operates 13 production plants worldwide. Its global footprint is expanding, with recent investments including a second European factory in Hungary and a $4.3 billion battery plant under construction in Spain through a partnership with Stellantis.
Innovation remains at the core of CATL’s strategy. The company recently unveiled a breakthrough battery technology capable of charging up to 520km (323 miles) in just five minutes, setting new standards in fast-charging capabilities.
While US lawmakers have expressed concerns about national security risks, some industry experts argue that cooperation with Chinese firms like CATL is essential for accelerating global clean energy adoption. With its cutting-edge technology and growing international presence, CATL is poised to remain a key player in the transition to electric mobility.
