When Pick n Pay quietly closed its doors at Hyde Park Corner in late 2024, it left behind one of Johannesburg’s most coveted retail spaces. Now, the spotlight shifts as Checkers steps into the limelight, transforming the spot into a gleaming, upmarket Fresh X flagship store that’s anything but ordinary.

A New Era for Hyde Park’s Most Exclusive Retail Floor

Checkers’ new flagship at Hyde Park Corner isn’t just another grocery store. It’s a retail experience designed for high-end shoppers in one of Joburg’s most affluent areas. Positioned between Sandton and Rosebank, Hyde Park Corner is synonymous with luxury, and this new Fresh X fits right in.

Gone are the plain aisles and price-focused displays. Instead, the store now boasts an in-store Krispy Kreme, a dedicated Kauai health bar, and a restaurant-quality meat market. Think free-range chicken, premium steak cuts, artisan bakery treats, a wine cellar that feels more like a private tasting room, and an expansive health and wellness section.

This isn’t your quick grocery stop. It’s curated for the high-LSM clientele who expect more than just convenience.

Checkers Steps Up as Anchor Tenant in 2025

Hyprop, the retail powerhouse behind Hyde Park Corner, quickly secured Checkers as its new anchor tenant after Pick n Pay’s exit. The move is part of a wider strategy: Checkers isn’t just filling a space; it’s setting the tone for what luxury grocery retail can look like in South Africa.

In addition to the new Fresh X, shoppers at Hyde Park Corner now have access to a standalone Petshop Science store, also opened by the Shoprite Group. Stocked with premium pet food, organic treats, plush toys, and wellness products, it reflects the growing trend of pet-focused retail within luxury environments.

The Bigger Picture: Shoprite Group’s National Expansion Surge

The Hyde Park flagship is just one jewel in a glittering expansion for the Shoprite Group. In the space of a single week, the group rolled out 16 new stores, including two Shoprite branches, three more Checkers outlets, and two Usave stores. Over the past 12 months, a total of 194 new locations have opened under the group’s various brands.

This includes:

  • 43 Shoprite stores

  • 38 Usave stores

  • 29 Checkers stores

  • 3 Checkers Hyper stores

  • 81 new LiquorShop stores (split between Checkers and Shoprite)

It also includes significant growth in niche categories:

  • 60 new Petshop Science stores

  • 8 new Checkers Outdoor stores

  • 10 new Uniq Clothing branches

  • 1 Little Me baby goods store

It’s all part of what the group calls an “omnichannel growth strategy,” with the goal of reaching more shoppers in more ways than ever before.

What Shoppers Are Saying

The reaction on the ground and online has been one of curiosity and cautious enthusiasm. Many long-time Hyde Park visitors were sceptical about a supermarket filling the old Pick n Pay space. But that changed fast. Social media has been buzzing with locals sharing their visits, raving about the sleek wine cellar, the hot food deli, and even snapping selfies in front of the in-store Krispy Kreme.

One shopper posted, “I came in for spinach and left with sushi, a steak, and a pair of dog boots from the pet store. Hyde Park Checkers isn’t playing.”

From Necessity to Luxury: A Fresh Take on Grocery Retail

This isn’t just a switch in tenants. It’s a transformation of the grocery landscape in one of Johannesburg’s wealthiest enclaves. With Pick n Pay scaling back and Checkers expanding with purpose, it marks a shift in retail dynamics: luxury, experience-led grocery shopping is no longer a niche. It’s the new normal.

And with Checkers’ Fresh X now anchoring Hyde Park Corner, it’s clear that even a grocery run can be a little indulgent.
