While big cinema chains in South Africa are scaling back, one local favourite is quietly winning hearts and ticket sales, and doing it with popcorn in hand.

CineCentre, owned by the Avalon Group, might be smaller than industry giants like Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro, but in 2025, it’s becoming a big deal. With only five cinemas across three provinces, it’s bucking the trend of audience drop-offs by offering value, consistency, and a movie night that doesn’t cost a small fortune.

The smart way to beat a slump

Load-shedding, streaming fatigue, and the lingering impact of the 2023 Hollywood strikes have all taken their toll on the cinema industry. Ster-Kinekor has been forced to restructure. Nu Metro has cited content shortages. But CineCentre? It’s thriving.

CEO AB Moosa says their winning formula is simple: affordability, consistency, and customer rewards. “Our rewards discount bundles offered with every movie ticket and refreshment have been especially appreciated by our customers,” he explains.

They’ve launched a Cine-Sensational Deal that offers a 2D or 3D movie ticket, medium popcorn, and a drink for R149, or R120 on Budget Tuesdays. Each ticket also includes a rewards code valued at up to R1,470, with more perks linked to refreshment purchases.

When the power cuts, CineCentre doesn’t

Unlike many of its competitors, CineCentre was prepared for Eskom. Every location is equipped with generators, ensuring that power outages don’t dim the big screen. That alone has given it a major edge.

Moosa notes that while trading conditions across retail are tough due to inflation and a strained consumer base, their cinemas are staying steady. “Having been in the industry for 85 years, the Avalon Group has encountered numerous challenges over the decades and has successfully addressed these with a long-term vision,” he says.

More than a movie ticket

CineCentre isn’t just focused on films anymore. From birthday parties to sports screenings and even marriage proposals, they’re reimagining what a cinema can be. Moosa adds that they’re working on e-sports events, private venue hires, and community-facing offerings.

Their Everyday Lifestyle Rewards programme is also set to expand. Moosa says new partnerships are in the works to give guests more savings simply by showing up and enjoying a movie.

A small chain with a big legacy

While others shrink under pressure, CineCentre continues to expand its value offering and its reputation. With 85 years in the industry, the Avalon Group knows how to read the market and evolve with it.

For moviegoers in search of affordable entertainment that doesn’t feel like a compromise, CineCentre is stepping up. It’s proof that with the right focus, even a small cinema chain can take centre stage.
