DStv Expands R300 Package with Three New Kids’ Channels

Parents looking for affordable entertainment will soon have more to smile about. From 25 August 2025, DStv is permanently adding DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, and Nick Jr to its Family package.
The move comes as part of MultiChoice’s plan to strengthen its mid-range offering and position the Family bouquet as “South Africa’s home of kids’ entertainment.” With the latest additions, the Family plan now offers 14 children’s channels, alongside its mix of local shows and movies.
Why the Focus on Kids?
For many South African households, children’s programming is not just a nice-to-have but a core part of what keeps families subscribed. MultiChoice South Africa CEO Byron du Plessis said the decision was based on research that revealed Family customers valued kids’ content as much as homegrown drama and movies.
“We are making DStv Family the undisputed Home of Kids Entertainment,” du Plessis explained. “It is now easier than ever for households to enjoy safe, entertaining, and educational shows that keep children engaged.”
The Channels South Africans Know and Love
Nickelodeon has been a staple across sub-Saharan Africa since 2008, while Nick Jr has catered to preschoolers locally since 2014. DreamWorks, which launched on premium DStv tiers in 2022, is now making its way to a more affordable audience.
All three bring global recognition with a mix of fun, safe, and educational programming, a blend many parents in South Africa see as important in a media landscape where content quality can be hit-and-miss.
What It Means for Subscribers
DStv Family costs R339 per month with a decoder or R299 per month for the streaming-only option. Both support multiple streams, meaning kids can watch their favourite cartoons on tablets or laptops while parents enjoy their own shows on the TV.
This change also comes on the back of earlier 2025 updates, where Family subscribers gained access to Comedy Central, HGTV, and Disney Channel. Taken together, that means the Family package now has six more channels than it did at the start of the year.
Meanwhile, MultiChoice has extended its decoder promotion: the single-view device, usually priced at R749, will remain available at R499 until the end of September 2025. This is particularly appealing for larger households wanting an extra viewing point.
The Bigger Picture
These updates reflect a wider reshuffle across DStv’s mid-tier bouquets this year. Compact subscribers have seen the arrival of five fresh channels, while Access and EasyView also gained new options. It is a sign of how competitive South Africa’s pay-TV market remains, with MultiChoice balancing the pressure of streaming rivals while keeping traditional satellite packages attractive.
For parents navigating the tricky balance between screen time and quality content, the Family bouquet’s expansion may feel like good value at last. With Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, and DreamWorks joining the lineup, kids’ entertainment in South Africa just found a bigger home.
