Eskom Recalls NTCSA CEO Segomoco Scheppers After Key Role in Transmission Company Launch

Eskom has officially recalled Segomoco Scheppers, the interim Chief Executive Officer of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), marking the end of his secondment to the newly formed utility subsidiary.
Scheppers was appointed in July 2024 to oversee the transition and operationalisation of the NTCSA, a pivotal move in South Africa’s ongoing energy sector reform. With over three decades of experience in Eskom’s Transmission Division, his leadership was instrumental in establishing the NTCSA as a wholly owned subsidiary of Eskom Holdings.
“We owe Segomoco a huge debt of thanks for the skills he brought to bear to take the transmission business to a point of separation and create the NTCSA,” said Priscillah Mabelane, NTCSA Board Chairperson.
While Scheppers had been shortlisted for the permanent CEO position, the NTCSA Board has yet to make a final appointment. Eskom confirmed that both the Eskom Holdings and NTCSA Boards are accelerating the executive search to find a candidate who can lead the company into its next phase.
A formal announcement regarding an interim CEO (ICEO) will follow soon, Eskom noted. The incoming executive will be expected to drive the NTCSA’s strategy, which includes:
-
Fast-tracking the Transmission Development Plan (TDP),
-
Continuing the operational unbundling required by legislation, and
-
Laying the groundwork for a fair and competitive electricity market in South Africa.
The NTCSA is seen as a key element in the government’s drive to restructure the power sector and enhance energy security. It also supports the broader goals of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act (ERAA), which aims to open up the market and ensure long-term energy stability.
“His work paves the way for the necessary reforms in South Africa’s electricity sector,” added Mabelane, highlighting Scheppers’ role in building the framework for a more inclusive and competitive energy environment.
As South Africa navigates the challenges of transitioning to a more decentralized and diversified electricity system, the NTCSA remains a crucial part of that transformation—one that Scheppers helped shape from the ground up.
