The roles shaping tomorrow’s workplace

South Africa’s job market is evolving fast, and tech skills are firmly in the spotlight. According to Pnet’s September 2025 Job Market Trends report, certain roles have shown explosive growth, earning the label “future-proof”. These are the kinds of jobs that will not just survive automation and regulatory shifts but thrive because of them.

Cybersecurity consultants top the list, with demand jumping by an astonishing 188% over the past three years. Digital transformation consultants follow closely at 180%, showing how vital these experts have become for businesses trying to stay ahead of globalisation and compliance changes.

Other roles making waves include AI engineers, data engineers, robotics technicians, and digital sales specialists. While their growth rates are smaller, they represent career paths that promise longevity in South Africa’s rapidly digitising economy.

Why cybersecurity leads the way

Cybersecurity has long been a global hot topic, but in South Africa, its importance has intensified as companies rush to adopt cloud platforms and digital solutions. With cyberthreats growing more sophisticated and compliance frameworks tightening, organisations are willing to pay a premium for specialists who can secure their systems.

The numbers speak volumes. A near-200% increase in demand for cybersecurity consultants shows just how essential this role has become in keeping the country’s digital economy safe.

Digital transformation: The big reshuffle

Digital transformation consultants are the architects behind the shift to cloud computing, automation, and AI-driven analytics. South African companies are turning to them to guide large-scale changes that reshape everything from banking systems to retail strategies.

Their job is less about plugging in software and more about building roadmaps for technology adoption, ensuring businesses are not left behind. The sharp 180% rise in demand signals how urgently firms need this kind of expertise.

The AI effect

Artificial intelligence is rewriting the rules of the job market. Demand for AI engineers has risen 25% in three years, with AI now being described as one of the most future-oriented career paths. These engineers design the very systems that drive automation and decision-making in industries ranging from healthcare to logistics.

Data engineers, meanwhile, have seen a 19% increase in demand as companies wake up to the importance of data infrastructure. Without them, businesses cannot capture or analyse the information that fuels growth.

The ripple effect is also visible in non-IT jobs. Digital sales specialists have gained an 11% boost in demand, reflecting the shift towards CRM tools, AI-powered analytics, and marketing automation.

AI skills are no longer optional

One of the most striking findings is the surge in demand for AI skills overall. Since 2019, jobs requiring AI expertise have soared by 352%, with growth accelerating to 77% in the first half of 2025 alone.

Pnet points out that this demand falls into two categories. First are AI jobs, such as machine learning engineers and data scientists, who build systems from scratch. Second are AI-skilled roles in traditional sectors where workers now need AI literacy, like content creators who use ChatGPT or marketers using AI automation tools.

Interestingly, demand for AI-skilled workers is starting to overtake demand for dedicated AI specialists, proving that AI knowledge is becoming as fundamental as computer literacy once was.

Future-proofing your career

Anja Bates, Pnet’s head of data, says companies that invest in these skills will secure a decisive edge. For job seekers, the message is clear. Building technical expertise today is the surest way to remain relevant and resilient in a job market that will only become more competitive.

South Africans entering or rethinking their careers have an opportunity to aim for roles that are not just in demand now but are positioned to last. In a country where unemployment remains a pressing challenge, the rise of these future-proof tech jobs offers a glimpse of hope and direction.
