Pick n Pay Unveils Smart New App, Merging Online Shopping and Loyalty in One Seamless Platform

Pick n Pay has taken a bold leap into the future of digital retail by launching a brand-new mobile app that combines everything customers need into one smart, seamless platform. From groceries and rewards to bill payments and personalised offers, the new app is being hailed as the retailer’s most important digital milestone since it introduced its asap! delivery service back in 2020.
Over the past 18 months, Pick n Pay has completely rebuilt the back-end and front-end of its online platform. The result? A fast, AI-driven, and user-friendly app that integrates the popular Smart Shopper loyalty programme, on-demand delivery, and a suite of new features designed to make shopping smoother, smarter, and more rewarding.
“This is our biggest moment since launching asap! during the pandemic. We’ve brought everything together in one place to accelerate growth and take the customer experience to the next level,” said Enrico Ferigolli, Pick n Pay’s Retail Executive: Online.
What’s New in the App?
Available in Beta until September 2025, the new Pick n Pay asap! & Smart Shopper app offers:
-
Access to over 35,000 products
-
Delivery from over 600 locations across South Africa
-
Basket limit of up to 45 items
-
Flexible delivery scheduling and real-time order tracking
-
Ability to shop from a preferred store
-
Multiple payment options and cards
-
Smart Shopper integration: earn, spend, and manage points in-app
Plus, customers are now charged only for items actually delivered, thanks to a new pre-authorisation system—no more refund delays or wallet complications.
AI That Shops Like You Do
One of the standout features of the app is its AI-powered search engine, which learns your shopping habits and suggests products tailored to your preferences. Whether it’s promoting your favourite brands or showcasing the most relevant specials, the app gets smarter the more you use it.
Even better? New customers see a “Buy Again” list based on past purchases—even if they haven’t used asap! before.
Online Sales Soar—and There’s More to Come
Online retail is one of the retailer’s fastest-growing areas. In its most recent financial year (ending March 2025), Pick n Pay’s online sales grew by nearly 49%, with on-demand delivery growing 60%. Thanks to smart scaling and efficient logistics, the division is now profitable.
Interestingly, growth is no longer limited to company-owned stores. Franchise stores using the app saw triple-digit sales growth, a promising sign for Pick n Pay’s strategy to scale through partners.
Behind the Scenes: Faster, Leaner, Smarter
To support the digital shift, Pick n Pay revamped its operations. In just a few months, they reduced average delivery times by 24% and switched their delivery fleet from 40% cars to 87% motorbikes—a move that boosts speed and visibility.
A dedicated picking team ensures orders are packed quickly and accurately, while the company’s website will soon offer asap! deliveries from 600 stores, not just the previous 47. This broader coverage allows for a reduced delivery fee of R35, bringing value to even more customers.
Smart Shopper Just Got Smarter
The Smart Shopper loyalty programme is now fully integrated into the app. Customers can:
-
Earn and spend points on every order
-
Access personalised Club offers and discounts (coming soon)
-
Track rewards and update profiles in real-time
-
Sign up directly from the app
Value-Added Services and Future Updates
In addition to groceries, users can now pay bills, buy airtime and data, and use other value-added services directly from the app. Pick n Pay promises even more enhancements in the months ahead, focused on simplifying shopping and resolving customer queries faster.
A Strategic Move for Long-Term Growth
Under CEO Sean Summers, Pick n Pay is aligning its broader transformation strategy with a renewed focus on digital innovation. The launch of the new app marks a crucial step in building a scalable, tech-forward retail experience that keeps up with evolving customer needs.
“We’ve put all the building blocks in place,” Ferigolli added. “Now we’re ready to grow faster than ever before.”
With this next-generation app, Pick n Pay is redefining what it means to shop online in South Africa—combining speed, intelligence, rewards, and reliability in one platform. As the retailer continues to innovate, South African consumers can expect a smarter, more seamless grocery shopping experience—right at their fingertips.
