Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has named Simphiwe Nghona as its new sales and marketing director, signaling a fresh chapter in the company’s growth journey. Nghona officially took over the role on 1 July 2024, following the departure of his predecessor, Thomas Milz.

Nghona is no stranger to the automotive and financial sectors. With an impressive 27 years of experience, he brings deep expertise across importers, OEMs, distributors, and dealerships—not only in South Africa but across the broader African continent.

His career includes leadership roles at Standard Bank, where he served as group head of vehicle and asset finance overseeing operations in 14 African countries, and as Divisional CEO at WesBank, managing sales, marketing, and strategic partnerships. His hands-on dealership experience as executive director and dealer principal at VW Market Square in Kariega adds to his well-rounded industry background.

Now stepping into one of VWGA’s top leadership positions, Nghona will be responsible for shaping and executing the company’s strategic marketing and sales direction at a crucial time for the South African automotive industry.

“We are delighted to welcome Simphiwe into his new role as sales and marketing director. His extensive industry experience, strategic mindset, and leadership capabilities will undoubtedly strengthen our team and drive our growth initiatives forward,” said Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of VWGA.

Nghona’s appointment is seen as a vote of confidence in homegrown talent with pan-African insights—critical in an evolving market where digital transformation, customer engagement, and sustainability are reshaping the way vehicles are marketed and sold.

His unique blend of financial services acumen, dealership management experience, and continental perspective positions him to lead VWGA’s marketing and sales functions with agility and vision.

As VWGA looks to expand its footprint and deepen customer engagement across the continent, Nghona’s leadership is expected to bring fresh energy and strategic clarity to one of South Africa’s most iconic auto brands.
