A small but welcome relief for motorists

South Africans heading to the petrol station this week will finally have reason to smile. After months of tense global oil movements and a rand that seemed to live on a rollercoaster, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has confirmed a price cut across most fuel types from Wednesday, 5 November 2025.

Petrol drivers will see a 51-cent per litre decrease, while diesel users can expect slightly smaller drops: 21 cents per litre for 0.05 percent sulphur diesel and 19 cents per litre for 0.005 percent sulphur. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will also fall by 61 cents per kilogram, while illuminating paraffin is trimmed by a modest 1 cent per litre.

The DMRE says the downward adjustment is largely due to stronger rand performance and softening oil prices through October, which together created an over-recovery in local fuel costs.

How global factors played in our favour

October was a volatile month in the oil market. Prices swung between 58 and 68 US dollars a barrel, driven by fluctuating trade tensions between the United States and China. Yet, despite the turbulence, the average price of refined products like petrol and diesel ended lower, good news for importers like South Africa.

At home, the rand averaged R17.29 to the dollar, stronger than the previous month’s R17.49. That improvement shaved more than 10 cents per litre off the basic fuel price across petrol and diesel, according to the DMRE’s calculations.

With both the international and local conditions leaning positive, officials opted to pass the benefit straight to consumers, keeping the Slate Levy (which balances under- and over-recoveries in fuel prices) at zero cents per litre for November.

What it means at the pumps

Here’s what drivers will pay from Wednesday:

Inland regions

  • 93 Petrol: R20.97 (per litre)

  • 95 Petrol: R21.12 (per litre)

  • Diesel 0.05 percent: R19.13 (wholesale)

  • Diesel 0.005 percent: R19.20 (wholesale)

Coastal regions

  • 93 Petrol: R20.18 (per litre)

  • 95 Petrol: R20.29 (per litre)

  • Diesel 0.05 percent: R18.30 (wholesale)

  • Diesel 0.005 percent: R18.44 (wholesale)

LPG prices drop to around R33.98 per kg inland and R30.82 per kg at the coast.

A short-term win for weary consumers

While the cuts are relatively small, they come as a welcome reprieve for households and businesses squeezed by high transport and food costs. The petrol price has hovered above R21 per litre for much of 2025, leaving consumers sensitive to even minor changes.

Economists warn, however, that the global picture remains uncertain. Oil prices could rise again if geopolitical tensions worsen or if the rand weakens sharply. For now, though, November brings a rare bit of good news at the pump, and South Africans are taking it.

So, if you’ve been waiting to fill up your tank or fire up the braai gas, this might be the month to do it.
