TotalEnergies Eyes Offshore Drilling in South Africa as Energy Hopes Rise

Published

on

French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies has revealed plans to begin offshore drilling in South Africa next year, provided it receives the necessary regulatory approvals. The move could mark a turning point for the country’s ambitions to secure energy independence and attract new foreign investment in the sector.

Mike Sangster, TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President for Africa, announced the company’s intentions during a recent industry conference. He confirmed that TotalEnergies currently holds exploration rights to four offshore blocks in South African waters.

If drilling proceeds as planned, it could help boost South Africa’s domestic energy supply and reduce the country’s long-standing reliance on imported fuel.

Boosting Energy Security Through Exploration

TotalEnergies has played a significant role in South Africa’s offshore exploration landscape, having made substantial gas discoveries at the Brulpadda and Luiperd fields in the Outeniqua Basin near Mossel Bay. These discoveries were once heralded as potential game-changers for South Africa’s energy sector.

However, the company faced a setback in July when it announced plans to withdraw from Block 11B/12B — home to the country’s largest known offshore gas reserves. TotalEnergies cited commercial viability concerns, signaling a cautious shift in approach amid a tough global energy market.

Legal and Technical Hurdles Slow Progress

While South Africa offers promising geological prospects, companies like TotalEnergies have faced persistent obstacles. Legal battles led by environmental advocacy groups and bureaucratic delays have slowed progress across multiple exploration projects.

Additionally, the region’s harsh ocean conditions — including strong currents and rough seas — pose technical challenges that have deterred some investors.

Despite these hurdles, Sangster’s announcement suggests renewed optimism and a willingness to work with South African authorities to unlock the country’s offshore potential.

A Legacy of Energy Development

TotalEnergies has operated in South Africa since 1954 and maintains an integrated presence across the oil and gas value chain. Its continued investment in the country signals long-term commitment, even as market dynamics and regulatory environments evolve.

With the global energy transition in full swing, South Africa is under pressure to develop local energy resources that support economic growth while navigating environmental concerns. TotalEnergies’ proposed drilling initiative could represent a vital step toward balancing these goals.

Whether the 2026 offshore drilling plans move forward will depend largely on the speed and clarity of regulatory processes. Still, the announcement has reignited hopes that South Africa can tap into its vast offshore reserves and strengthen its energy security.

As the government aims to streamline energy approvals and attract foreign capital, TotalEnergies’ next move will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and policymakers alike.
