Anele Mdoda under fire after reaction to Bolt driver Isaac Satlat’s murder
When news broke that a young Bolt driver had been murdered in Pretoria West, the country recoiled. But the tragedy soon turned into a broader, heated debate after media personality Anele Mdoda-Mgudlwa shared her emotional reaction online.
Her response was blunt and uncompromising. She called for those responsible to be executed, saying they did not belong on earth. The post spread quickly and sparked fierce discussion across social media.
At the centre of it all is the death of Isaac David Satlat, a Nigerian student who was building a future in South Africa.
A life cut short in Pretoria West
Satlat was an automotive engineering student who was expected to graduate in March 2026. According to reports, he had ambitions to continue his studies in Canada. Like many students trying to make ends meet, he worked as an e-hailing driver.
On Wednesday, 11 February, he responded to a ride request. What followed was horrific. He was hijacked and strangled by a male and female passenger. The assault was captured on the vehicle’s dashcam, showing him being attacked until he became unresponsive.
His body was later discovered dumped in bushes in the Moshongo area of Atteridgeville. The hijacked Suzuki Ertiga was recovered nearby on the same day.
Authorities have confirmed that suspects linked to the crime are in custody. They face charges of premeditated murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Satlat’s family has stated that the motive appears to have been robbery, not xenophobia.
Bolt confirms key detail
As the story unfolded, Bolt confirmed the incident. However, the company also revealed that Satlat was using another driver’s profile at the time of the attack.
This detail has had serious implications. Bolt stated that because he was not operating under a verified account, he is not eligible for the company’s standard compensation provided for death or injury to verified drivers.
That revelation added another layer to an already painful situation, raising questions about safety, verification, and the pressures drivers face within the gig economy.
The backlash against Anele
While many South Africans understood the anger behind Anele’s post, others accused her of selective outrage.
Several social media users questioned why celebrities appear more vocal when foreign nationals are victims of crime but less visible when South Africans are harmed in similar circumstances. Others pointed to Anele’s own past experience in Cape Town, when she livestreamed being mistreated by an e-hailing driver who was allegedly using a false profile.
The criticism quickly shifted from the crime itself to broader tensions around crime, nationality, and public commentary.
In a country grappling daily with violent crime, emotions run high. For some, her reaction reflected collective frustration. For others, it crossed a line and exposed inconsistencies.
No they deserve to die I’m sorry but they don’t belong on earth. Why kill him? Why? No they must be in excuted https://t.co/Sty0MCcFja

A bigger conversation about crime and anger
South Africa’s crime crisis often leaves citizens feeling powerless. Social media has become a space where grief, rage, and political tension collide in real time.
This case touches on several fault lines: the vulnerability of gig workers, the issue of undocumented or shared driver profiles, and the complex conversations around foreign nationals living and working in South Africa.
It also raises uncomfortable questions about public figures and the weight their words carry. When celebrities speak in anger, the ripple effects can be significant.
At the heart of this story, however, is a young man who was weeks away from graduating, with plans to build a life beyond these borders. His death has devastated his family and shaken the e-hailing community.
As the legal process unfolds, many are left asking not only how such violence continues, but also whether our public discourse is helping or deepening divides.
