Black Coffee Turns 49 in Style, Raises R3.1 Million for Music Talent

South African music icon and Grammy Award winner Black Coffee celebrated his 49th birthday in unforgettable style, hosting a glamorous black-tie gala dinner at LUXX Venue in Sandhurst, Johannesburg.
But this wasn’t just a party – it was a powerful moment for the future of South African music.
The star-studded evening also marked the launch of the Black Coffee Music Foundation, an initiative dedicated to developing and supporting young musical talent across the country. The gala successfully raised a staggering R3.1 million in support of the Mzantsi Music Academy.
A Night of Purpose and Prestige
The event drew a crowd of high-profile attendees from across entertainment and politics. Guests included ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, media personality Anele Mdoda, and music industry veterans like Somizi Mhlongo, Khwela, and Oskido.
Behind the scenes, Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, spoke about the importance of the night:
“We are absolutely thrilled with the generosity shown tonight. Raising R3.1 million means we can take the first steps in physically building the foundation of the Black Coffee Music Academy,” she shared, as quoted by TimesLive.

A Vision Bigger Than Music
Born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, Black Coffee has long been a champion for change – not just through music but also through meaningful social initiatives.
From his early involvement in student support during the Fees Must Fall campaign, to using his influence to uplift others, he remains committed to giving back.
Speaking to The Citizen, he shared his broader vision:
“I want to realise a dream for kids after matric, that there are other options, and things have changed over the years.”
The newly launched Black Coffee Music Foundation aims to fill that gap – offering mentorship, education, and career development for emerging artists in South Africa.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Turning 49 in the public eye while giving back in such a major way is classic Black Coffee – stylish, intentional, and community-driven.
With over two decades in the music industry and a Grammy under his belt, this latest milestone marks not just another year, but a powerful new chapter in his mission to inspire and empower the next generation.
