Cardi B has never been one to hold back. Whether she’s rapping, performing or speaking her mind, the Grammy-winning rapper’s honesty has always been part of her power. But her latest revelation, shared in a raw and emotional conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, shows a far more vulnerable side of the global superstar.

“I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t do nothing”

Cardi spoke candidly about the emotional collapse she experienced over the past year. The 33-year-old admitted that the combination of career pressure and the breakdown of her marriage with fellow rapper Offset pushed her into “the deepest depression” of her life.

“I couldn’t function,” she said plainly. “I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t do nothing.”

The rapper revealed that during that period, everything in her life came to a halt, including her plans to release a follow-up to her 2018 debut Invasion of Privacy.

A marriage that broke her spirit

When Cardi filed for divorce last August, she already sensed the end long before it became official. “I felt the love dying,” she reflected. “From my end, from his end.”

Even as her marriage to Offset fell apart, she was carrying their third child, a daughter named Blossom. The pain of watching her relationship crumble while expecting a baby was unbearable. “It’s like feeling something dying while you have a human growing in you,” she said.

Despite her attempts to fix things, including working on her own flaws, Cardi said Offset “took advantage” of her efforts to rebuild the relationship, something that, in her words, “killed all hope of reconciling.”

Choosing loneliness over chaos

What makes her story so deeply human is her admission that she chose to be alone, not because she wanted to be, but because she needed to survive. “I was very lonely because I chose to be lonely,” she said. “I knew I had to stop it. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. I was crying every day. I was thinking about it every single day.”

Cardi’s comments offer a glimpse into the personal cost of fame, where private heartbreak unfolds under public scrutiny. Social media users flooded her posts with messages of support after the episode aired, praising her bravery for speaking out about depression and the emotional toll of divorce.

A new chapter begins

Though the last year pushed her to her limits, Cardi says she’s come out stronger. Her recovery didn’t come overnight. She admitted it took time, therapy, and facing her fears of life “without that person.”

Now, she’s finding her rhythm again. Her long-awaited second album, Am I the Drama?, was released last month to global buzz. She’s also preparing for the arrival of her first child with NFL player Stefon Diggs, marking a new phase of both motherhood and healing.

“But I overcame that,” she said with confidence. “And I am the strongest that I have ever been.”

More than fame, finding peace

Cardi B’s openness about her mental health is a reminder that no amount of fame, wealth, or success shields anyone from emotional pain. Her story resonates not because she’s a celebrity, but because she’s human, a woman who’s been broken, rebuilt herself, and found her footing again.

In a world that rewards perfection, Cardi’s vulnerability has become her realest performance yet.
