Culture Craze
Charlize Theron Isn’t Sorry She Missed Jeff Bezos’s $50 Million Wedding, And She’s Not Alone

“They suck and we’re cool,” she said, but it was more than a mic drop.
While Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez celebrated their $50 million wedding along the romantic canals of Venice this past weekend, some of Hollywood’s most recognisable names were making noise of a different kind, and not from the dance floor.
Among the voices leading the call-out was South African-born Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who used her own star-studded event, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) Block Party in Los Angeles, to speak out against what she sees as disturbing contrasts between extreme wealth and the social crises plaguing everyday people.

“Not sad” to miss it, but sad about what’s happening
“I think we might be the only people who didn’t get an invite to the Bezos wedding,” Theron joked at her event. “But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
Beneath the humour, though, was a sharp critique of inequality, policy failures, and growing indifference to the suffering of marginalised communities, both in the US and her native South Africa. Speaking candidly, Theron condemned cuts to foreign aid, which she said were directly threatening critical health services back home.
“People will lose their lives,” she warned. “Many already have, unfortunately, and at a frightening rate.”
Theron didn’t stop there. From immigration policy to gender-based violence, from the erasure of queer and trans lives to the rollback of women’s rights, her speech highlighted a world where justice and progress are increasingly under attack, while some are partying on yachts.
Despite the heavy tone, the CTAOP event had a hopeful outcome: over $1 million raised to support youth-focused health initiatives in Africa.
O’Donnell pens a poem. And it cuts deep.
Meanwhile, American comedian and TV veteran Rosie O’Donnell used her personal Substack to share a poem simply titled “Jeff’s Wedding.” It wasn’t subtle.
In her verses, O’Donnell questioned the values of those in attendance, called out Bezos for his treatment of workers, and sharply contrasted Lauren Sánchez (Bezos’s new wife) with his former spouse, MacKenzie Scott, who has become widely respected for giving away billions in philanthropy.
The poem also took aim at beauty ideals, celebrity culture, and the carefully curated performances that often mask the power structures beneath.

Not everyone RSVPed with silence
While many celebrities sipped champagne in Venice, a few opted out, or at least sent messages from afar.
-
Olivia Munn previously referred to Sánchez’s space travels as “gluttonous.”
-
Mia Farrow shared praise for MacKenzie Scott instead.
-
Katie Couric took to social media to cheekily critique Sánchez’s fashion choices on the big day.
A moment of excess, met with a mirror
In many ways, Bezos’s wedding became a symbol, not just of opulence, but of the widening disconnect between the ultra-rich and the rest of society. The backlash didn’t just target who wore what or who got invited; it spotlighted the systems behind the glamour.
In South Africa, where basic healthcare systems rely in part on the very aid Theron referenced, her comments struck a deeper chord. As international funding dries up, especially in post-pandemic recovery, the cost of inequality is no longer just abstract; it’s measurable in lives.
When celebrities choose to speak up
Charlize Theron, Rosie O’Donnell, and others who criticised the wedding didn’t just opt out of the party. They challenged the narrative that silence is neutral.
In doing so, they’ve reminded us that while wealth can buy a ceremony on the canals of Venice, it doesn’t buy the moral high ground. And in 2025, that message may be louder than the wedding band.
