A Voice That Shaped Generations

Darren Scott was more than just a presenter – he was a defining voice in the evolution of South African radio. Known for his deep resonance and sharp humour, Scott rose through the ranks of the country’s most prominent stations, including Radio Bop, 5FM, Jacaranda FM, East Coast Radio, and most recently, HOT 102.7FM.

His career spanned over 30 years, during which he gained a loyal following through sports broadcasting, lifestyle shows, and his natural ability to speak to South Africans across demographics.

His Long Journey With Melanoma

Scott’s battle with melanoma began in 1986, making it a nearly 40-year journey. In December 2024, he reflected on this publicly, writing:

“Melanoma is an invasive skin cancer, with a very high risk of death. While early-stage melanoma is treatable, late-stage cases remain a different story, even with medical advancements.”

Despite recurrent diagnoses, Scott remained committed to his work. In his final year, he returned from the United States – where he had been living with his sons, Mark and Matthew – to continue earning income to cover the high cost of treatment.

In April 2025, his ex-wife, Sarah-Kate Accetta, launched a BackaBuddy campaign to support his care. The campaign raised over R410,000 out of a R960,000 goal, reflecting the deep affection and respect the public held for him.

HOT 102.7FM’s Statement

His final professional home, HOT 102.7FM, shared the following tribute on his passing:

“Darren will be remembered for his passion for radio, wit, creativity and charitable work. He will be missed by all of us at Hot 102.7 and listeners across the country,” the station said.

They also noted that the past few months had been particularly difficult, with Scott undergoing multiple hospital stays as his health declined.

Tributes From Around the Country

Social media was quickly filled with tributes from colleagues, listeners, and former collaborators. Many described Scott as a generous mentor, a bold creative force, and the voice behind some of their most memorable radio moments.

Listeners across platforms shared stories of growing up with his broadcasts and how his work had helped them feel connected, entertained, and informed.

A Legacy That Lives On

Darren Scott’s death marks the loss of a media icon. But more than that, it’s the loss of a uniquely human storyteller – someone who didn’t just fill airtime, but who created real moments of meaning for millions.

As tributes continue to pour in, it’s clear his voice will echo far beyond the radio waves. Through his decades of work, Scott helped shape a broadcasting culture rooted in authenticity, humour, and compassion.

Rest in peace, Darren Scott – your sign-off may be final, but your voice will never fade.
