DJ Chymamusique Walks Again: A Story of Strength, Survival, and Healing

“One Step at a Time”: A New Chapter Begins
They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. For DJ Chymamusique, that step came recently on social media, using a walking frame and moon boots, visibly fragile yet unbroken. In his caption, he wrote, “Healing journey. One week at a time, ke leboga lerato le support” (I am grateful for the love and support).
That short post hit deep. It showed the world he is still in the ring, even if he’s fighting a different kind of battle now.
The Crash That Altered Everything
Not long ago, Chymamusique and fellow DJ Poizen were returning from a gig when tragedy struck. The accident cost DJ Poizen his life. Chymamusique survived but was gravely injured. He spent time in the ICU, then in hospital wards, cut off from his usual life, forced into healing.
In those dark early days, many wondered whether he would walk again or whether music would ever feel like the same home to him.
From Isolation to Connection: Letting Us In
Instead of retreating, Chymamusique began gently pulling back the curtain on his rehabilitation. He didn’t just post selfies or vague “I’m better” messages. He shared bruises, shaky steps, frustration, and sometimes tears.
His social feeds became a kind of communal recovery space. Fans, fellow artists, and even strangers chimed in with prayers, jokes (to lift spirits), and tips about walking frame height. He responded, reminding everyone that interaction is part of his daily anchor.
It’s strange how vulnerability from a public figure can create a quiet wave of empathy. Suddenly, many people spoke not only about his journey but also about their own bones, bodies, and hidden wounds.

More Than Muscle: Healing the Self
Walking again is no small feat. But what’s equally visible, perhaps more so, is the internal work. Chymamusique has spoken about frustration, fear, and the strange new identity of “injured star.”
He encourages fans to treasure the present. To not wait for “perfect health” before expressing gratitude. To build a life around what’s possible, even when everything’s changed.
In South Africa, where mental health conversations often stay behind closed doors, his openness matters. It normalises that setbacks are not shameful but part of life. That you don’t always have to “bounce back” perfectly; you just keep moving.
A Moment That Echoes
When a music icon shares raw emotion, we lean in. In Joburg lounges, taxi ranks, and university halls, people whisper, “Did you see Chymamusique’s post?” In comment threads: “I admire your bravery.” “We walk with you.” “You’ve given some hope.”
His progress is not just about stepping forward physically; it’s about reminding a nation that recovery is messy, that strength often lives in small increments, and that we are stronger when we walk together.
Healing isn’t linear. Some days there’s a smile, others a tear. But through it all, Chymamusique’s journey is teaching us this: it doesn’t matter how fast you move. What matters is showing up, one step at a time.
