A Six-Year Battle Finally Ends

For actress and entrepreneur Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, the long road to legal freedom has finally reached its end. After six years of court proceedings and public speculation, her divorce from world-renowned DJ Black Coffee has officially been settled, and the judgment has everyone talking.

The South Gauteng High Court this week ruled that the couple’s customary marriage is valid and falls under community of property, meaning that both parties legally share their marital estate. This ruling effectively overturns Black Coffee’s previous claim that an antenuptial contract (ANC) existed, protecting his assets from division.

According to the court order, Black Coffee must pay R15 000 per month in spousal maintenance and R50 000 monthly in child support. The most significant detail, however, is that Enhle stands to receive half of her ex-husband’s estate, a potential payout of around R500 million, given that Black Coffee’s net worth is estimated at approximately R1.38 billion.

A Public Journey Through Pain and Power

Moments after the ruling, Enhle took to Instagram to express gratitude to those who stood by her during the emotionally draining legal battle. Sharing photos of her support circle, she thanked her family, legal team, and close friends. The post, filled with relief and quiet triumph, resonated with fans who have followed her journey since the split became public in 2019.

While Enhle has kept her dignity through the drama, social media users have not been as restrained. The conversation around the case has dominated timelines, splitting opinions across South Africa. Some celebrated her win as a victory for women’s rights and the recognition of customary marriages under South African law. Others questioned whether Black Coffee might appeal the ruling, especially after his sister, Lungie Maphumulo, commented online: “Good luck to her. From where I’m standing, I don’t think she will win this.”

That remark, posted before the final ruling, only fuelled speculation that the internationally acclaimed DJ might challenge the outcome in court.

What the Law Says

Legal experts have explained that the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act gives a wife equal rights to property if the marriage meets all the cultural and legal requirements. Enhle’s legal team successfully proved that those requirements were met, leading to the court’s decision to declare the union valid and binding in community of property.

In simple terms, this means that unless an appeal overturns the ruling, Enhle is legally entitled to half of the assets accumulated during the marriage.

Public Reactions: From Applause to Advice

Online, the response has been intense. Many have praised the actress for standing firm through years of scrutiny. One user wrote that if an appeal goes forward, it “won’t change the application of the Customary Marriages Act.” Another warned that even if he appeals, Black Coffee “might lose even more” and should think carefully before doing so.

Others took a more reflective tone, pointing out that the ruling ultimately benefits their children. As one comment read, “By giving her half, you are in extension giving it to your kids. What’s the hurrah about? Don’t let money poison you. In the end, it’s the lawyers that will benefit.”
