Week seven of Big Brother Mzansi brought another emotional goodbye as Ilano became the latest housemate to leave the competition. Her exit came just before the show narrowed down to its final ten contestants, but for many viewers, her journey inside the famous house will be remembered for much more than where she finished.

At just 22-years-old, Ilano stepped into the spotlight as the first openly transgender woman to enter the reality show. In doing so, she quietly made television history in South Africa while also delivering plenty of memorable moments along the way.

For Ilano, the experience was never just about reaching the finale. It was about showing up as herself.

Walking into the house with purpose

Before entering the house, Ilano already understood the significance of her presence. She prepared herself mentally, emotionally and physically for what the experience might bring.

Rather than focusing on the pressure of representing a community, she approached the opportunity with clarity about who she is and what she wanted to share with viewers. Her aim was simple: to bring her authentic energy into the house and let South Africans see that.

Reality television often rewards strategy and calculated moves, yet Ilano chose a very different path. She admitted she had never really followed the show before joining it and did not walk in with a carefully planned game plan.

Instead, she relied on being herself.

According to her, if she had the chance to do it all again, she would approach the experience exactly the same way.

From glam moments to comfort cooking

Life inside the Big Brother Mzansi house can be intense, especially in the early days when contestants must adjust to constant surveillance and strong personalities. Ilano admitted the cameras initially felt strange.

By the second day, having a camera suddenly focused on her face caught her off guard. Over time, though, she became used to it and eventually forgot they were even there.

What many housemates and viewers noticed quickly was the role she naturally took on in the house. Ilano became known as the person who helped bring a sense of care and comfort to daily life.

She cooked meals that fellow contestants described as some of the best in the house. She also helped other women with hair and makeup while keeping her own style polished and glamorous. Whether she was serving a bold look or preparing food in the kitchen, Ilano always found ways to stand out.

Her willingness to help others was not part of a strategy. She explained that being supportive simply reflects who she is.

Even when she felt overlooked at times, she never changed that approach.

A moment of representation for South African TV

Reality shows have often been criticised for not reflecting the diversity of the people who watch them. Ilano’s presence marked a meaningful shift for Big Brother Mzansi and sparked conversations online about representation on South African television.

Across social media, many viewers praised her confidence and authenticity. Others spoke about how important it was to see a transgender woman participating openly in one of the country’s most widely watched reality shows.

For some fans, her journey symbolised progress in how stories from different communities are being included in mainstream entertainment.

Life after Big Brother

Although her time on the show has ended, Ilano says she already has a clear direction for what comes next.

Acting and presenting are both part of her future ambitions. She also plans to continue working in hair and makeup, though she hopes to approach these opportunities with more focus and intention.

Being in the public eye at a young age can be overwhelming. Ilano acknowledged that building a career while navigating visibility as a transgender woman comes with its own challenges. Because of that, she plans to move carefully and prioritise environments where she feels safe and respected.

Despite those challenges, she remains determined to build what she describes as her empire.

The competition moves forward

With Ilano’s departure, the Big Brother Mzansi house has officially entered its Top 10 stage. The remaining contestants still competing for the title are Thandeka, Liema, Bravo B, Que, Mmeli, Ashay, Trixie, Didi, King Wanda and The Don.

As the competition intensifies, viewers continue to debate who might take the crown. Yet even as the show moves forward, Ilano’s presence has already left a mark that many fans say will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Her journey proved that sometimes the most powerful impact in reality television is not about winning the game, but about changing the conversation.
