How Skeem Saam Rescued Lethabo Mekoa’s Acting Dream

She wasn’t rejected – she just couldn’t afford it.
When Lethabo Mekoa received an acceptance email from Tyler Perry Studios in 2022, she thought she was finally about to live her dream. The American production house had invited her to join its renowned acting programme – a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a young South African actress straight out of high school.
But there was one problem: the cost. Between the programme fees, visa costs, accommodation, and travel, Lethabo simply couldn’t afford it. And just like that, her golden opportunity faded – not because she wasn’t talented, but because her family didn’t have the means to get her there.
A Door Closes, But a Stage Opens
Heartbroken and ready to give up on acting, Lethabo found herself questioning whether she even belonged in the industry.
That’s when Skeem Saam came calling.
A casting opportunity from the hit SABC 1 drama series landed in her inbox not long after the Tyler Perry disappointment. With nothing to lose, she gave it a shot – and landed the role of Ntswaki, a bold, fearless teenager who quickly became one of the show’s standout characters.
“If it wasn’t for Skeem Saam, I honestly don’t think I’d still be acting,” she told Daily Sun.
Ntswaki: A Character, A Comeback
For viewers, Ntswaki is a feisty scene-stealer. For Lethabo, she became a lifeline. The role not only reignited her passion but also gave her a platform to showcase her talent to millions across South Africa.
Now a household name, Lethabo has turned what felt like a dead-end into a nationally celebrated breakthrough. She’s earned praise not just for her on-screen presence but for her honesty about the setbacks and sacrifices behind the scenes.

Fans on social media have praised Lethabo for her resilience and humility, with many calling her story “a true inspiration.” TikTok edits and fan-made clips of Ntswaki regularly trend, while younger fans see her as proof that you don’t need to go overseas to make it.
“She’s living proof that local dreams are worth chasing,” wrote one follower on X (formerly Twitter).
Looking Ahead, Rooted at Home
Though the Tyler Perry dream is still alive – Lethabo hasn’t ruled out international opportunities – she’s now focused on building her career in South Africa. Her story has become a beacon for aspiring actors who don’t have deep pockets or global passports but still dare to dream.
In the end, it wasn’t Hollywood that launched her career – it was Skeem Saam, a proudly South African show watched by millions every weekday.
And that might just be the better story.
