Lira Reflects on Her Journey One Year Into Stroke Recovery

It’s been a year since South African singer and songwriter Lira, born Lerato Molapo, took the stage again following a life-changing stroke. In a touching celebration of resilience and artistry, Lira has reflected on her journey back to music – a journey that has touched the hearts of fans across Johannesburg and beyond.
The celebrated vocalist recently performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) in April 2025, marking her first major festival appearance since her recovery. “It was emotional,” she shared. “I cried many tears and released much. Tears of pride, joy, and triumph.”
A Stroke That Changed Everything
In 2022, during a tour in Germany, Lira suffered a stroke that impaired her ability to speak, read, and write. The sudden health crisis shocked fans, and the road to recovery was long and challenging. But with what she calls “the best medical team available” and an unwavering support system, Lira slowly regained her abilities and, in May 2024, returned to public performance.
Her first comeback took place on Mother’s Day 2024 at the Nirox Foundation with the Johannesburg Philharmonic and fellow artist Maleh. It was a pivotal moment for the singer. “It’s a year since I’ve been singing post-stroke,” she reflected in a recent Instagram post. “This was surreal. I never thought I would be singing so soon.”
Celebrating Strength at Home
At the Bassline Fest in Johannesburg, Lira was warmly welcomed back to the stage in 2024. That performance symbolized much more than just a musical return – it was a tribute to her strength and perseverance.
More recently, she graced the stage at a tribute event for legendary actress and singer Abigail Kubeka at the Joburg Theatre. The show honored Kubeka’s 67-year career and was a fitting venue for Lira to reflect on the legacy she is building, both musically and personally.
“I’ve worked hard,” Lira said. “There were times when the progress was slow. But now, I know you can achieve anything you put your mind to – just do the work daily.”

Inspiration Beyond Music
Lira has also become a motivational figure, sharing her recovery experience to inspire others facing adversity. Describing the stroke as a “blessing in disguise,” she credits the experience with teaching her to slow down and appreciate life more deeply.
Outside of the spotlight, Lira continues to give back. She recently donated school shoes to learners at her former primary school, showing her commitment to community upliftment and youth empowerment.
Looking Ahead
Lira’s story is one of triumph, healing, and renewed purpose. Her performances, especially at CTIJF 2025, have been celebrated not just for their artistry but for their emotional weight. The response from fans and fellow musicians alike has been overwhelmingly supportive.
With a powerful voice and an even stronger spirit, Lira continues to inspire – a living testament to resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.
In a world often focused on speed and constant output, Lira’s journey reminds us of the power of slowing down, healing, and coming back stronger. Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole continue to cheer for her – and many draw courage from her story.
