Sunday night shock

South African viewers of Mzansi Magic’s hit drama Shaka iLembe had a surprise waiting for them on Sunday evening. In one of the opening scenes, two unexpected faces stood out among the extras: podcaster MacGyver Mukwevho, better known as MacG, and musician-comedian Mzwakhe Mbuli Jr, better known as Robot Boii.

For a show built on history, the cameos offered a light, modern twist. Both stars had lines in the scene. Robot Boii delivered a short monologue in Zulu, while MacG threw in a rallying cry for the king: “Shaya iShaka lena.”

Behind the scenes: MacG’s acting debut

On his own, Podcast and Chill, MacG laughed about how much effort went into what ended up being a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. The scene took a full day to shoot, even though it lasted just a few minutes on screen.

MacG admitted he took the role seriously, calling it his “acting debut.” At one point, he yelled “yes, shaya, shaya” during a fight sequence, only for the crew to cut the scene. “They told me, bro, it’s 600 years ago; you can’t say yes,” he joked, proving that even cameos need historical accuracy.

From podcast banter to the battlefield

The cameo wasn’t just luck. A year ago, director Angus Gibson appeared on Podcast and Chill for an interview. MacG later revealed that the team’s not-so-secret agenda was to ask for roles in Shaka iLembe. Co-host Sol Phenduka put it bluntly: “We just wanted to lock you up in a room and be like, yo man, we need cameos.”

That persistence paid off. Fans got to see two of SA’s most recognisable personalities swap mics and beats for spears and war cries.

Fans react

The appearance sparked a lively response online. Some viewers said the cameos broke the tension of the historical drama, while others loved the playful crossover. Many noted how MacG “shot his shot” and actually landed it, turning podcast chatter into prime-time television.

The moment shows how blurred the lines between digital platforms and traditional TV have become. For Shaka iLembe, it also proves the show’s cultural pull, drawing in audiences and personalities far beyond its historical setting.
