From Jozi’s stand-up stages to Hollywood’s big screen

Trevor Noah has always had a knack for turning everyday situations into global talking points. Now, South Africa’s most famous comedy export is taking that storytelling talent to a whole new level. Paramount Pictures has snapped up his idea for The Island, an R-rated comedy that blends sharp wit with a survivalist twist.

The concept, first imagined by Noah during the pandemic, brings together two unlikely characters: a high-powered businesswoman and a down-to-earth male high school teacher. When a plane crash leaves them stranded on a deserted island, the pair must put aside their differences if they want to survive. Comedy, chaos, and sparks are all but guaranteed.

Hollywood heavyweights on board

Paramount has brought in writer Andrew Jay Cohen to shape Noah’s idea into a screenplay. Cohen has been behind cult hits like Neighbours and Zoolander, and more recently, the queer rom-com Bros. With his reputation for outrageous yet heartfelt humour, expectations are high that he will capture Noah’s trademark edge.

Noah himself will produce the film through his company, Day Zero Productions. He is not going it alone: Norman Aladjem of Mainstay Entertainment joins as co-producer, while Rebekah Cheyne and Derek Van Pelt take up executive producer roles. The announcement sparked excitement across social media, especially after Day Zero Productions called it their first official “com-rom,” a comedic romance adventure.

Why this project matters for Noah and SA talent

For fans back home, Noah’s Hollywood momentum is more than just another career milestone. It is another chapter in his ongoing journey from Soweto stand-up to global entertainment powerhouse. Over the past decade, he has delivered 12 comedy specials, including Netflix’s I Wish You Would, produced hard-hitting documentaries such as The Turning Point, and even worked alongside South African names like Anele Mdoda on film projects.

By securing a deal with Paramount, Noah is not only cementing his international influence but also creating new opportunities for South African creatives through Day Zero Productions. The move adds to a growing list of local stars making their mark abroad, reinforcing that Johannesburg and Cape Town are still strong pipelines for global talent.

Audience reaction: Excitement and pride

Fans across South Africa have already been buzzing online, celebrating Noah’s latest win. For many, his career represents possibility, proof that South Africans can shape global culture while keeping their unique voice. Social media was quick to pick up on the “island” theme, with users joking about how a Joburg vs. Cape Town dynamic could be the perfect South African version of the film.

The Island is still in early stages, but with Paramount behind it and Noah’s signature voice steering the concept, it looks set to be one of the most talked-about comedies of the coming years.
