The 2025 Renault Duster 4WD brings significant updates to South Africa, transforming the fan-favourite budget SUV into a more refined and capable machine. Once sold for its simplicity and reliability, the Duster now sports a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, a refreshed exterior, and a more spacious cabin. The price reflects these upgrades at R549 999.

Interior Comfort and Practicality

The new Duster sits on a Captur-based platform, providing notable improvements in space:

  • Rear legroom up by 33 mm

  • Shoulder room increased by 13 mm

  • Headroom improved by 7 mm

  • Boot space expanded from 414 L to 444 L

Cabin materials use recycled plastics, which may feel firm but add a sustainable element. The design remains simple, robust, and functional, suited to its budget-friendly character.

On-Road Driving Experience

The 1.2T three-cylinder petrol produces 96 kW and 230 Nm, assisted by the mild-hybrid system during acceleration and braking. While quieter and smoother than the old diesel, it offers narrower torque availability, requiring more gear changes in city driving. Fuel economy averages 7.0 l/100 km, slightly higher than the diesel predecessor.

Off-Road Capability

The Renault Duster 4WD shines off-road, with features including:

  • Multiple drive modes: Eco, Auto, Snow, Mud, Rocks, and Sand

  • Centre coupling allowing a 50:50 torque split

  • Ground clearance of 255 mm, excellent approach, departure, and breakover angles

These specs make the Duster capable on gravel roads, sand dunes, and moderate trails, offering genuine adventure potential for outdoor enthusiasts.

Specifications at a Glance

  • Engine: 1.2-litre turbo 3-cylinder petrol + MHEV

  • Power: 96 kW @ 5 000 rpm, 230 Nm @ 2 750 rpm

  • 0-100 km/h: 10.5 sec

  • Fuel Economy: 6.2 l/100 km (claimed), 7.0 l/100 km (tested)

  • Transmission: 6-speed manual

  • Price: R549 999

Verdict: Who Should Buy the Duster 4WD?

The Renault Duster 4WD balances practicality, off-road capability, and a modern mild-hybrid engine.

  • Ideal for buyers who venture off-road regularly

  • Less suited for heavy urban commuting; a 4×2 variant may be more practical in city settings

While it retains its honest, unpretentious character, the Duster now offers enough refinement and capability to appeal to both traditional fans and new buyers seeking a rugged SUV with modern touches.
