Court to Hear Bail Bid in Case of Slain WSU Student Sisonke Mbolekwa

The Mthatha Magistrates Court is set to hear the bail application on Wednesday for the man accused of fatally shooting Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student Sisonke Mbolekwa during a protest on campus last month.

Manelisi Mampane, a residence manager at WSU, faces serious charges after allegedly opening fire on protesting students. His initial bail hearing, scheduled for last week, was postponed due to a power outage at the courthouse.

Mampane has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition following the incident that shocked the university community.

The case is now scheduled to proceed, with investigating officer Colonel Mandla Miya expected to give crucial testimony in court.

The shooting has sparked outrage among students, many of whom have pledged to continue demonstrations until justice is served. Calls for accountability have intensified, and Mbolekwa’s family has reportedly begun legal action against the university.

Last week’s court delay left many frustrated, but Wednesday’s proceedings could mark a turning point in the legal process. The court had postponed the matter specifically to address its electricity issues and ensure the hearing could proceed without interruption.

As the hearing gets underway, all eyes will be on the court’s decision, and on how the case might affect broader student safety concerns at South African institutions.
