State of the City: Mayor Morero Faces Pressure Over Joburg Woes

Published

Dada Morero is preparing to deliver his State of the City Address this week, with residents and political analysts expecting clear answers on the city’s deteriorating infrastructure and basic services. His speech, set for Wednesday, comes at a critical moment for a metro grappling with daily frustrations over poor service delivery.

From failing traffic lights and widespread potholes to unreliable water and power supplies, pressure is building on Morero to outline concrete steps to restore stability and accountability in the city.

Since taking office nearly a year ago, Morero has faced turbulence as the city battles service failures and public dissatisfaction. Water outages remain common, and a criminal syndicate vandalising traffic lights has worsened transport problems in the city.

Reviving the inner city is also expected to be a major focus of his upcoming address, with many expecting new plans to revitalise key areas.

Political analyst Levy Ndou says Morero’s success will depend on whether he can respond directly to citizen frustrations, especially ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

“The State of the City Address must speak to issues that matter to ordinary residents—clean streets, functioning infrastructure, and better service delivery in townships,” said Ndou.

He added that while challenges remain, the mayor must also take the opportunity to reflect on achievements made so far.
