EFF’s VAT Victory March Targets Treasury Over Suspended Hike

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will stage a “VAT Victory March” in Pretoria on Monday, moving from the Union Buildings to the National Treasury offices. The demonstration follows a recent court ruling that temporarily blocks a proposed VAT hike.
This legal victory came after a joint challenge by the EFF and Democratic Alliance, resulting in the Western Cape High Court suspending the increase. The EFF has criticised the hike and associated fiscal policy as unconstitutional and harmful to the poor.
The protest is scheduled just two days before Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is set to deliver the national budget. The EFF aims to use the march to highlight its stance against what it calls “anti-poor” government measures.
Major roads expected to be affected during the march include Stanza Bopape, Madiba, Paul Kruger, and Lilian Ngoyi streets.
“On 19 May 2025, the EFF will lead the #VATVictoryMarch to the National Treasury in celebration of the people’s victory against the anti-poor, proposed VAT increase,” the party announced on social media.
They added that the court’s decision was a win for South Africa’s poor, working-class, and unemployed communities who would have been most impacted by the tax hike.
